The Iris Applique is for all levels of stitchers. Three Iris's are appliqued using organza and silk fabrics on a silk fabric background. Some of the petals and leaves are embellished with surface embroidery stitches.

I am no longer selling the kit because of the man hours that goes into preparing the kit but you can purchase the instructions and provide your own fabrics. I sell the instruction as a hard copy or PDF file which I will email to you once I have received your payment.

There are detailed instructions and diagrams for the application process and for all the embroidery stitches. I have written the instructions with the beginner in mind. This project is use for learning how to work applique for pictures or for embellishing quilts.

Five Maple leaves are embroidered from small to large on a tea dyed silk fabric.  Not only do the leaves change in size but also in colour and technique.

We begin with the smallest leaf which represents spring. The leaf is

worked in the technique of needle painting (long and short stitch) using one strand of the DMC embroidery floss. The veins and stem of the leaf are worked in couched down hollow gold pieces.

Leaf two (the next largest) is also worked in needle painting with couched down hollow gold for the veins and stem, darker DMC embroidery floss's are used to reflect the change in colour of the leaf.

The third (middle size leaf) is worked in a combination of applique and needle painting. A piece of silk organza fabric, with a piece of net over top is applied to the base fabric in the shape of the leaf. Needle painting is worked over the top of the leaf. Areas of the leaf are left unembroidered revealing the organza fabric and net underneath. In the exposed fabric areas, a Blackwork pattern is worked over top in colour.

The veins and stem are worked in the same method as leaf 2.

The fourth and fifth leaves (second from largest and largest) are worked in a combination of applique and Needle painting. A piece of silk organza fabric with a piece of net over top are applied over both leaves. The two leaves have needle painting (long and short stitch) worked just around the edges of the leaves, each leaf is worked in a slightly different shade. Both leaves have a Blackwork pattern worked over top of the organza fabric and net in different colours and different patterns.

The Hummingbird is worked from a colour picture of a Hummingbird.

First the fabric has been hand painted using Dylon threads. The design is drawn on the fabric, the fabric is then placed in the frame with a piece of organza fabric over the top to diffuse the colour of the base fabric.

The piece is now ready to be embroidered on.

Three different shades of grey synthetic fabrics are sewn onto the design for the wings of the hummingbird, embroidery stitches are used to outline individual feathers and to shade the feathers.

A selection of the flowers are embroidered with long and short stitch using two strands of Eterna Silk.

Japan gold is sewn down on some of the flowers and then silk threads are sewn over the top.

The body of the Humming bird is worked in shadow trapunto. Backstitch is worked around the head and back of the bird and down the center lined with blue rayon thread, and around the stomach of the bird with white rayon thread .

Over the top of the padded shadow trapunto body, embroidery stitches are worked in the rayon threads.
