    INTRODUCTORY TO BLACKWORK: BUTTERFLY

The butterfly is beginners piece, introducing the stitcher on how to do blackwork in the tissue paper transfer method, where the patterns are worked with-in a tacked out line of the design rather than from a set chart. The instructions are detailed with step-by-step charts for working the blackwork patterns.

There is also an option for purchasing the 3 PDF files with colour work-in-progress pictures of the butterfly that I use for the on-line class. There is no on-line class currently working but the butterfly can be easily be worked on your own.

The blackwork patterns are worked on a a counted fabric using black DMC embroidery cotton, Kreinik Mutlicoloured Cord for the flowers and Gold Very Fine Pearl Purl for outlining the wings. There is a choice of butterfly position and pattern layout, which are in the instructions - see the pictures opposite as an example and also some of my past students work on the Berlin Embroidery Designs On-Line Classes Forum.

I will offer the butterfly as on-line class again in the future.

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

There is a choice of fabrics to work the blackwork design:

  • 32 count antique white Monika fabric (50% cotton and 50% Modal). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness) and is soft and smooth to the touch. The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

  • 32 count antique white Belfast 100% Linen fabric with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses) giving a natural look.

  • 28 count antique white Lugana fabric (52% cotton and 48% Rayon). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

  • 28 count antique white Cashel 100% Linen fabric with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses) giving a natural look.

  • 14 count or 16 count aida fabric (100% Cotton). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric. 14 count is the easiest fabric to count for absolute beginners in counted embroidery.

CARRICKMACROSS LACE SAMPLER KIT - Kit of the Month

This sampler kit is suitable for beginners in the Carrickmacross Lace technique.

Carrickmacross Lace inspired the design for Kate Middleton's wedding dress and has brought the technique back into popularity.

The technique is similar to Fine White Work but is simpler and does not need to be worked in a frame or hoop. It is a fun technique because of the dimensions it creates and involves different stitches such as couching, buttonhole stitch and net patterns.

This is a a very informative instructional kit the techniques that are covered in the instructions can be applied to you own designs.

1: Couching

Picture 1 shows the basic stitch of Carrickmacross Lace which is couching down a cord with a fine white thread and then areas of the cotton organdie cut away to expose the net in preparation for net patterns or button hole pops to be worked on the net.

2: Couching with Picot Edge

Picture 2 shows couching in the center, a picot edge on the outside edge of the circle using the cord and the fine white couching thread. In traditional Carrickmacross lace the picot edge loops should be even in size and spacing. Cotton Organdie has been cut away to leave the net exposed at the center of the larger shapes in preparation for net patterns or button hole pops to be worked on the net.

3: Couching with Picot Edge - Enhanced

Picture 3 shows more than one row of couching which creates heavier lines of white stitching. The picot edge has been worked alternating different size loops.

4: Pops

Picture 4 shows pops worked in the center of the circle. Pops are a buttonhole wheel worked over the net.

5: Buttonhole Bars

The pictures below show buttonhole bars and buttonhole bars with thorns. The fabric and net has been cut away from behind the buttonhole bars.

Please note it is very important to use the appropriate cotton organdie fabric for carrickmacross lace. The fabric should be non fraying, otherwise the stitching will come away from the fabric when you do the cut work. Organza fabric will not work with this technique.

CURVED BLADE SCISSORS

I highly recommend the curved blades scissors for cutting away the cotton organdie as the shape of the scissors allows you to get close to the couched cord to cut away the organdie. I also sell straight blades in this type of scissors which are very sharp inexpensive scissors.

DISPLAYING THE SAMPLES

Even though the back of the embroideries are not exactly the same as the front, the samples can be displayed so both sides can be viewed. I found a two-sided  free standing frame at Michael's craft store. The samples are sandwiched between two planes of glass, and look lovely and delicate like snow flakes.

The samples would also look beautiful mounted on a colour background such as silk paper or coloured mat.

SPIRAL FLOWER BROOCH KIT

The spiral brooch measures 2 1/2 inch by 2 1/2 inch and makes a beautiful accessory for clothing and can be displayed in a 4 inch picture frame or on top of a padded box lid when not being worn.

This project takes about a day to make (5 - 8 hours depending on how fast you stitch). The embroidery is worked by couching down strands of metal threads which are cut to the required lengths.

The finished brooch can be painted with a clear non-yellowing varnish so it does not tarnish. The brooch is worked in warm gold (copper), black, dark purple and bright violet pearl purl lines with sections of black and violet wire check purl chips (beads).

If you would like to change any of the coloured lines on the brooch (pearl purl) or sections (wire check purl chips) that I have used on the brooch for any of the colours that I sell on the website just leave a comment in the comments box when you place your order. There will be an additional cost if you want to substitute gold, silver or copper as these threads are more expensive to manufacture.

With the kit of supplies there are instructions and diagrams for working the brooch and you will receive a PDF file via email which has over 60 colour work-in-progress pictures for each stage of working the brooch. There are also instructions on how to mount the embroidery in a frame so that you can quickly and easily take the brooch out to wear it. The picture below shows 4 pages of the 16 page PDF file.

This is a great value kit suitable for any level of stitcher. I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

The brooch is a beginners metal thread technique. It takes about 8 hours to make.

What is the difference between Gilt and Gold 2% WM metal threads?

HAREBELL

The Harebell is a beginners metal thread technique, that can be worked in either gold 2%, gilt, silver or copper metal threads.

The instructions are detailed with lots of diagrams. The fabric and felt padding comes with the design hand drawn on so there are no worries about transferring the design.

Working the embroidery: The flowers, buds and leaves are padded with felt. Over the top of the felt a variety of different metal threads are sewn down. In some areas blue embroidery floss will be used to couch down the gold, in others yellow sewing thread is used. The embroidery is worked on a cotton velveteen background in a choice of dark green, dark blue or black. Velveteen fabric is used as it has a deep pile which is good for giving the edges of the goldwork a neat finished look. The original embroidery was worked on a dark green velveteen fabric.

Scissors Case Design by Beppy Berlin, Center Border Motif from Fancy Work & Fantasies - F208 Endearments Old & New by Carol Costello

Portion of the Hapsburg Lace Scissors Case worked on Antique Blue Mono Canvas by Tawney Carter

HAPSBURG LACE SCISSORS CASE

This scissors case is for 3 1/2 inch long by 1 3/4 inch wide embroidery scissors such as Gingher embroidery scissors and case can be worked by all levels of embroiderers, if you enjoy counted thread such as cross-stitch you will enjoy working the scissors case.

The stitches are worked in pearl cotton on an 18 count mono canvas. In the example opposite white pearl cotton is worked on 18 count brown coloured mono canvas.

Lacy Hapsburg lace stitches are worked leaving spaces between the patterns for ribbons to be inserted. Beads are sewn down to emphasize some areas of the case. Each pattern is charted out and explained in detail how it is worked.

This scissors case looks great worked in any coloured mono canvas with a contrasting pearl cotton colour. See the other Hapsburg lace designs on this webpage to see the different colour canvas and threads that can be used.

If you purchase the instruction booklet alone you can choose your own colour canvas and contrasting pearl cotton thread (more than one colour can be used) and different colour cord to give your case a unique look. If you dislike French knots, beads have proven to be an appealing substitute (to the embroiderer and the admirer), the choice is yours.

Gillian Kirby adapted the Hapsburg Lace bookmark into a pouch for her thread cutter pendant. She used purse closure magnets for the flap to close the pouch. The magnet is in a plastic mesh which you can cut to fit and sew in place.

HAPSBURG BOOKMARK / MINI SAMPLER

This bookmark can be worked by all levels of embroiderers, if you enjoy counted thread such as cross-stitch, canvas work and blackwork you will love working this sampler. The bookmark is great for beginners in canvas work embroidery as the stitches are easy and fun to do.

The bookmark is worked using pearl cotton on an 18 count mono canvas. In the example opposite white pearl cotton is worked on 18 count antique blue mono canvas.

The lacy canvas work stitches are worked in rows. Ribbons are inserted between some rows of the Hapsburg lace patterns to give a touch of colour. Each pattern is charted out and explained in detail how it is worked.

This bookmark looks great worked in any coloured mono canvas with a contrasting pearl cotton colour. See the other Hapsburg lace designs on this webpage to see the different colour canvas and threads that can be used.

If you purchase the instruction booklet alone you can choose your own colour canvas and contrasting pearl cotton thread (more than one colour can be used) and different colour ribbon and beads to give your bookmark a unique look.

I give a choice of working the pansies in two different ways.

  1. The pansy design drawn on to a good quality 100% cotton muslin fabric and provided with DMC embroidery floss. (Muslin fabric is an excellent ground fabric to work the needle painting embroidery on as you are less likely to get a run in the fabric or the fabric pucker).

  2. The Pansy design drawn onto silk fabric and provided with Needlepoint silk threads. (Use the highest quality fabric and threads).

Purple Pansy Kit and 3 PDF File Lessons with Colour Work-in-Progress Pictures

There is no on-line class scheduled for the Purple Pansy but you can purchase the on-line class PDF files with the kit to help you stitch the embroidery on your own.

The purple pansy kit has detailed instructions and lots of diagrams to guide your through the embroidery.  The diagrams are very clear and detailed showing how the stitches are worked on each area of the design and guiding you step by step through the embroidery from the beginning  to the end. The colour work work-in-progress pictures of the pansy show you exactly what the embroidery should look like at each stage of the embroidery.

The fabric comes with the design hand drawn on so there are no worries about transferring the design and the threads come wrapped on a long thread bobbin and numbered so you know exactly which colour to use.

The Pansy embroidery is worked in a single strand of the DMC cotton (floss) in the needle at one time, embroidering the design in straight stitches. These stitches are either long and short or are all the same length but alternate in positions so that the colours blend together. The long and short technique is explained in detail in the kit instruction booklet.

The kit and instructions are sent by mail and the 3 PDF files with colour work-in-progress pictures are sent by email.

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

WILD ROSE

The Wild Rose is a beginner needle painting technique. For a complete explanation of the technique Click Here!.

The Wild Rose kit has detailed instructions and lots of diagrams to guide your through the embroidery. The fabric comes with the design hand drawn on so there are no worries about transferring the design and the threads come wrapped on a log floss bobbin and numbered so you know exactly which colour to use.

Working the embroidery: The Rose is worked in a single strand of DMC embroidery floss in the needle at one time, embroidering the design in straight stitches. These stitches are either long and short or are all the same length but alternate in positions so that the colours blend together.

This technique will give an embroiderer good practice in the long and short technique, gaining the skills the embroiderer needs to tackle the more advanced needle painting projects i.e. the field mouse and the birds.

If you have any questions as you are working the embroidery you can email me at any time and I will be happy to help you. I am offering free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

FLOWERS, BUTTERFLIES AND CANADIAN FLAG

Shadow work is simple form of 2-sided embroidery. The flowers, butterflies and Canada flag are for any levels of stitchers. The easiest of the designs is the black and red butterfly 3 and the hardest of the designs is the Canada Flag.

Working the embroidery: The Shadow Work stitch is a backstitch worked on the front of the work alternating back and forth along two lines that are parallel to each other (bands), on the back of the work herringbone is created by the stitches crossing from one edge of the band to the other. The herringbone shows through the fabric at the front of the work as an opaque band. The ends of the threads are easily finished off in the stitches at the back of the work so that they do not show up obviously in the embroidery. Each design can be displayed in a card window mat or in a clear perspex frame or in a clear perspex key ring (please see the pictures on the left and below). Each of these frames can be purchased separately below and mounting instructions are included in the booklet.

The instructions includes diagrams for working the herringbone stitch and finishing ends and an enlarged picture of the back of the embroidery so you can see how the herringbone stitch lays. I also explain how to mount the embroidery can be mounted so that the embroidery can be displayed from both sides.
