Berlin woolwork is canvas work patterns worked in needle point (half cross-stitch) on canvas using embroidery wools.

Jane Alford presents a stunning selection of floral designs from this period, including poppies, bluebells, roses, pansies and more, some of the designs incorporate the use of beads.

Designs are worked on 14 count interlock canvas with DMC Medici wools, DMC Cotton Perle No. 5 and DMC Beads.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO GOLDWORK

Soft back, 80 pages, written by Ruth Chamberlain and published by Search Press.

This book gives some good advice on how to prepare fabric for goldwork.

The techniques illustrated in the book are off the sampler featured on the front page of the book, and there are some great photographs on how to do couching down silk threads and Japan threads over string and in the method of Or Nue and other techniques, it is a good reference book and there is a nice use of colour with the gold threads.

The sampler is not featured as a whole but in parts.

You will get a better understanding of the needle painting (silk shading) technique from one of my needle painting kits as there are diagrams and more detailed instructions but it is a good book to have photograph stages of an embroidery which you would not get from my needle painting instruction booklets.
