BRITISH
EMBROIDERY
Curious Works from
the Seventeenth Century
Soft
back book, 109 pages, text by Kathleen Epstein, published by
Colonial Willamsburg Foundation, Williamsburg, Va and Curious Works
Press, Austin Tex.
This
book is a history of embroidery from the 17th century, featuring
jewel-like caskets with multilayered needlework and detailed
3-dimensional pictures (Stumpwork), intricate samplers and different
types of lace.
Kathleen
Epstein has embraced the study of seventeenth-century textiles with
meticulous research and contagious enthusiasm. She recognizes that
the needlework can be studied on multiple levels including such
diverse and surprising topics as politics, religion, trade, education
and social status. One of the intriguing questions she raises is who
made these marvelous pieces. Kathy points out that they were made by
school girls, amateur needleworkers, and professionals who were
trying to earn a living. A wide range of ages is represented , from
girls as young as eight to grown men and women in their sixties and seventies.
Although
individual seventeenth-century textiles have been displayed in the
DeWitt Wallace Decorative Arts Gallery since its opening, this is the
first time the collection has been seen as a whole. Kathy Epstein has
assembled more than 115 pieces of exquisite needlework and related
artifacts form the collections of Colonial Wiilliamsburg and private
lenders. These objects invite our sturdy comparison and
contemplation. Equally as important they provide sheer visual delight
to the viewer.
