A-Z OF THREAD PAINTING

Hard back book ring bound, 128 pages, from the Inspirations magazine, published by Country Bumpkin Publications.

This book has a variety of thread painting projects ranging from beginners to advanced. Thread painting is also known as needle painting, soft shading, long and short stitch and silk shading.

Designs in the book include albatross, emu, eagle, meadow song, elephant blowing bubbles, sea shell and starfish, anemones, apples, lily, rose with rose hips, fuchsia, heartsease (pansies), briar rose, dahlia, rose with spider web, pear, lavender, tulip, wine merchants window.

The book also features my baby burrowing owl which is an beginners design, and my wolf, baby wren, spaniel and Siamese cat which are all advanced designs.

A chapter at the beginning of the book has the work in progress pictures of the long and short stitch and other stitches used on the thread painting designs. There is a chapter on working a thread painting project from beginning to end with work-in-progress photos of my baby burrowing owl.

Because of the complexity of the thread painting technique the book does not have work-in-progress photos of each of the projects featured in the book which could be a disadvantage if you are a beginner in the thread painting technique.

If you are a beginner I would suggest working my baby burrowing owl kit and have the A-Z of thread painting book for reference. The kit has detailed instructions with lots of diagrams to work the embroidery and the A-Z of Thread Painting book has step-by-step colour photos of the baby burrowing owl as a visual guide to keep you on right track.

BEGINNER'S GUIDE TO SILK SHADING

Soft back book, 48 pages, written by Clare Hanham (trained at the Royal School of Needlework) and published by Search Press

A simple guide to needle painting. There are photograph stages of the long and short stitch on flowers, leaves and a butterfly with instructions.

You will get a better understanding of the needle painting (silk shading) technique from one of my needle painting kits as there are diagrams and more detailed instructions but it is a good book to have photograph stages of an embroidery which you would not get from my needle painting instruction booklets.

BEGINNERS GUIDE TO TRADITIONAL JAPANESE EMBROIDERY

Soft back book, 78 pages, written by Julia D Gray and published by Search Press Needlecrafts.

According to tradition students of Japanese embroidery must watch a master at work and steal the knowledge. Here Julia shares her passion for this exquisite craft, revealing her in-depth knowledge of the skills and symbolism involved.

Detailed instructions reveal the intricacies of working with silk thread on silk fabric, and clear step-by-step photographs show how to create beautiful embroideries inspired by the four seasons.

I love the photos showing the stages of the embroidery in this book, makes it very clear on how to set up your frame and work the satin stitches. There are nine designs that can be worked from the book.

LONG AND SHORT STITCH EMBROIDERY

A Collection of Flowers

Soft back book, 128 pages, written by Trish Burr and Published by Sally Milner Publishing.

A nice collection of flowers to embroider in the needle painting technique.

I would recommend this book if you have had some experience in long and short stitch.

The book does not have diagrams on how to stitch each petal and leaf of the flowers like you will get when you purchase one of my needle painting kits but it is a good book if you have worked a few of my designs and are now familiar with the technique and would like some more flower designs to stitch. I think that the flowers have a nice artistic quality.
