    Blackwork Silhouette Series

There are four designs in the owl and rabbit blackwork silhouette series that can be purchased individually as PDF files, hard copy patterns or kits or purchased as a set at a reduced price. The set of four tell a story, the outcome is up to you.

Each design has its own blackwork pattern which is worked from a chart. There is also step-by-step numbered diagrams for the working the pattern in the instruction booklet.

The designs can be worked on 28 count fabric in a 5 inch embroidery hoop and the embroidery mounted in the hoop afterwards and hung from the screw of the hoop. The original embroideries are worked in Caron Collection Waterlilies variegated silk thread with black Au Ver a Soie, Soie D'alger Silk thread for the outlining. INTRODUCTORY TO BLACKWORK: BUTTERFLY

The butterfly is beginners piece, introducing the stitcher on how to do blackwork in the tissue paper transfer method, where the patterns are worked with-in a tacked out line of the design rather than from a set chart. The instructions are detailed with step-by-step charts for working the blackwork patterns.

There is also an option for purchasing the 3 PDF files with colour work-in-progress pictures of the butterfly that I use for the on-line class. There is no on-line class currently working but the butterfly can be easily be worked on your own.

The blackwork patterns are worked on a a counted fabric using black DMC embroidery cotton, Kreinik Mutlicoloured Cord for the flowers and Gold Very Fine Pearl Purl for outlining the wings. There is a choice of butterfly position and pattern layout, which are in the instructions - see the pictures opposite as an example and also some of my past students work on the Berlin Embroidery Designs On-Line Classes Forum.

I will offer the butterfly as on-line class again in the future.

The blackwork love birds are for all levels of embroiderers.

The love birds are worked in blackwork patterns on a counted fabric using black DMC embroidery cotton, black YLI silk thread, red Au Ver a Soie silk thread and Kreinik Metallic #4 Braids.

Working the embroidery: The blackwork embroidery is worked within a tacked outline of the design with a variety of different blackwork stitches.  A dimensional picture is created by changing the thickness of the thread and by reducing the stitches in the pattern.  The patterns are stitched from step-by-step individual diagrams and there are detailed instructions on how to work the embroidery. I have introduced Kreinik Metallic threads to highlight the beautiful vibrant colours of the love birds. The bodies of the birds are outlined in gold very fine pearl purl (real metal thread) and the eyes are gold spangles (real metal sequins).

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

Intermediate Blackwork On-line Class

Blackwork Study of Cats

The Blackwork Cats can be Worked and Framed as a Group

32 Count Fabric - All Four Cats Together: Height: 6 7/8 inches (17 1/4 cm)     Width: 6 7/8 inches (17 1/4 cm)

28 Count Fabric - All Four Cats Together: Height: 8 inches (19 1/2 cm)     Width: 8 inches (19 1/2 cm)

The Blackwork Cats can be Worked and Framed Individually

32 Count Fabric - Each Individual Cat Measures: Height: 3 inches (7 3/4 cm)     Width: 3 inches (7 3/4 cm)

28 Count Fabric - Each Individual Cat Measures: Height: 3 1/2 inches (8 3/4 cm)     Width: 3 1/2 inches (8 3/4 cm)

If you are considering working my Blackwork Elephant I highly recommend taking the study of cats intermediate class. The study of cats will use the same blackwork patterns and shading techniques as the blackwork elephant so will give you a good foundation and practice before working the advanced blackwork elephant. It will be a prerequisite to have taken a blackwork class with me (in person or on-line) or worked and completed one of my intermediate blackwork designs in the tissue paper transfer method to work the blackwork elephant.

Class Description

The blackwork study of cats on-line class is suitable for embroiderers who have worked a previous blackwork embroidery in the tissue paper transfer method. The instructions and on-line class will be very detailed but some experience in blackwork is necessary to give you the technical ability to shade in blackwork.

Four patterns are worked on the blackwork design. Each cat will have its own blackwork pattern and the cat will be shaded with the blackwork stitches by changing the thickness of the thread and by changing the density of the the pattern.

Emphasis in the intermediate on-line class is to get away from using outlines to neaten up edges and concentrate on an artistic look to the embroidery creating depth and dimension with the blackwork patterns and shading. You do not have to have an artistic eye to work the intermediate study of cats as I will break down the embroidery into stages that will guide you through the embroidery and improve your embroidery skills.

The on-line class will have four PDF file lessons with work-in-progress photographs of the patterns on the cat and additional working tips not in the instruction book.

When the PDF lesson is posted the student will be able to download the file and print off the lesson. The lesson will remain on my website from the posting date to end of the class so the student can download and print of the lesson at their leisure.  The lessons are exclusive to the registered and paid participants of the on-line class.

Below are a few examples of the colour pictures that are in the PDF files. I show the stitch process of every pattern section on the embroidery in the PDF files in step by step photos.

There is no audio aspect with the on-line class but there is the opportunity to correspond with the designer and other students about working the embroidery through the Berlin Embroidery Designs On-Line Class Forum

As part of the on-line class I offer free critique on the embroidery as you work it. This means that when you post a picture on the forum or email me a picture of your work, I will give you constructive feedback on what you are doing well or where you may need to make changes. I like to post the picture with the critique on the forum as it is very beneficial to all participants taking the on-line class to review and apply to their own work. I can post the picture with the critique anonymously if you would prefer not to have your name with the picture.

Kit Details

The kit has an instruction book with step-by-step patterns of the blackwork patterns, diagrams on the outline stitches and instructions for working the lovebirds. The student can work the design on 32 count or 28 count fabric, the original embroidery was worked on 32 count fabric. If you are intending to work the blackwork elephant then you should work the study of cats on 32 count Belfast linen fabric.

Materials in Kit: 1 Piece of Fabric 14 inch by 14 inch   •   1 Spool of Black No. 12 Perle Cotton   •   1 Skein of Black DMC Embroidery Cotton   •   1 Skein of Black YLI Silk Thread   •   1 Bobbin of Red Tacking Thread   •   2 No. 28 Tapestry Needle   •   1 No. 26 Tapestry Needle   •   1 No. 10 crewel needle.

Explanation of Fabric Types

32 count antique white Belfast 100% Linen fabric with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses of fabric threads) which results in uneven size holes but has a natural look. This is the fabric that the blackwork elephant is worked on, you should use this fabric if you are planning on working the blackwork elephant embroidery.

32 count antique white Monika fabric (50% cotton and 50% Modal). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness) and is soft and smooth to the touch. The holes in the fabric are all the same size so easier to see. The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

28 count antique white Lugana fabric (52% cotton and 48% Rayon). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The holes in the fabric are all the same size so easier to see. The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

28 count antique white Cashel 100% Linen fabric with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses of fabric threads) which results in uneven size holes but has a natural look.

If you have never done blackwork before this project will be too large and overwhelming, this is not an easy design.

Class Description

The blackwork elephant is an advanced blackwork hand embroidery design. If you are interested in taking the class you need to have worked one of my other intermediate blackwork designs in the tissue transfer method and email me a picture of your work to: tanja@berlinembroidery.com so that I can check you are able to work on a counted fabric and can compensate patterns to the tacking lines. My suggestion is to work the Blackwork Study of Cats prior to the elephant as the cats have the same four patterns that are worked on the elephant so will give you a great foundation prior to working the elephant, but if you are not partial to cats you may do one of the other intermediate designs.

To give you some perspective of the difficulty of the elephant I have graded my blackwork designs below:

Beginners: Introductory to Blackwork Butterfly, Blackwork Etui Box, Blackwork Star, Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork Designs

Beginners/Intermediate: Blackwork Butterflies, Blackwork Fuchsia, Blackwork Horses, Blackwork Lovebirds

Intermediate: Blackwork Chickadee, Blackwork Peacock, Blackwork Pheasants, Blackwork Study of Cats

Advanced: Blackwork Elephant

The blackwork elephant on-line class is on-going through my website so you can join at any time and work it over the length of time you require to complete the elephant. The forum will remain open indefinitely and I will be here to answer questions and critique your embroidery (if you wish) as you are working the elephant. There is approximately 200  - 250 hours of stitching time on the elephant.

The elephant has 9 PDF file lessons with work-in-progress photographs of working the elephant.

The PDF lessons are posted on the forum, the student will be able to download the files and print off the lessons. The lessons will remain on the forum so the student can download and print off the lessons at their leisure.  I can also email the PDf files if you do not want to participate in the forum. The cost of the elephant design is the same whether you particiapte in the forum or not.

I offer free critique on the embroidery as you work it. The cost of the elephant design is the same whether you particiapte in the forum or not.

Supplies Required

A set of instructions will be mailed to the student prior to starting which will include the essential diagrams for the elephant and tissue paper to transfer the elephant onto the fabric. I do not provide these in PDF file form.

I also provide a kit of the following supplies, if you already have some of these supplies I can take the cost off your kit.  Please use the same fabric and threads listed below for the best results.

Cost of kit of all supplies is $70.00 Canadian Dollars.

Materials in Kit: 1 Piece of Fabric 22 inch by 27 inch 32 Count Antique White Belfast Linen Fabric  •   1 Spool of Black No. 12 Perle Cotton   •   2 Skeins of Black Au Ver a Soie, Soie D'ager Silk Thread   •   3 Skeins of Black DMC Embroidery Cotton   •   3 Skeins of Pea-Coat Variegated Weeks Dye Works Thread    •   2 Skeins of Black YLI Silk Thread   •   2 Bobbins of Red Tacking Thread   •   Packet of 5 No. 28 Tapestry Needles   •   Packet of 6 No. 26 Tapestry Needles   •  Two No. 10 crewel needles   •   Two Wire Needle Threaders

Information on Fabric and Thread

The blackwork elephant is worked on 32 count antique white Belfast 100% Linen fabric with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses of fabric threads) which results in uneven size holes but has a natural look. To get the best shading results you should work the elephant on 32 count and use the same threads as the original embroidery. If you substitute with a different fabric or threads you may not get the refined, fine art quality of the elephant. The blackwork elephant design took many hours of designing to get just the right look, please reproduce the design using the same fabric and threads to get the best results, thank you.

Tools Required

Embroidery Frame: Either a 24 inch slate frame, or 24 inch scroll frame or a 20 inch by 26 inch Stretcher Bar Frame and Thumb Tacks. The 24 inch scroll frame is probably the easiest to work the embroidery in.

Pair of Tweezers (optional - to remove tissue paper from between tacking stitches during design transfer process)

Dress Making Pins - To pin tissue paper to fabric

Embroidery Scissors

Payment Details

Registration for the class is open for new students who will join the on-going blackwork elephant on-line class forum where you will download the PDF files for the blackwork elephant and work the elephant at your own pace.

You need to have had some experience in blackwork to work the elephant as the elephant is an advanced design. When purchasing the design please email me to let me what blackwork you have done previously. If you have never done blackwork before this project will be too large and overwhelming, this is not an easy design.

Blackwork Elephant On-Line Class and Kit: $520.00 Canadian Dollars

The $520.00 Canadian Dollars cost includes on-line class - 9 PDF Files with work-in-progress pictures, participation on the on-line class forum and a kit of supplies (Worth $70.00) to work the elephant. Click Here to see a list of the kit contents. If you already have some of the supplies I can take off the cost of the supplies from your kit BUT it is important to use the same fabric and threads on your elephant for the best results. Substituting with a different fabric or threads will result in a differently shaded elephant.

Quantity: View Cart

Equipment Required

You will require a frame to work the blackwork elephant in. I do not recommend a hoop (ring frame) as it can leave marks on the fabric and spoil your beautiful embroidery. Probably the easiest frame to work the elephant in is a 24 inch scroll frame as you can roll the embroidery on the frame and then it is not a too far a reach to stitch the center of the elephant. I also suggest lacing the fabric at the sides of the frame so that you have tension on all four sides of the frame. There are needlework stores on the internet that sell scroll frames.

A slightly cheaper option is a 26 inches by 20 inches stretcher bar frame and brass thumb tacks at $25.00 Canadian Dollars. The fabric can't be rolled on the stretcher bar frame so you will have to work the head of the elephant upside down so that you can reach the area that you are working on. You can purchase the stretcher bar frame below.

BLACKWORK HORSE 1 MANGALARGA

The blackwork horse is a beginners blackwork kit.

The blackwork horse is worked in blackwork patterns on 16 count or 32 count fabric using embroidery cotton.

Working the embroidery: The blackwork embroidery is worked within a tacked outline of the design with a variety of different blackwork stitches.  A dimensional picture is created by reducing the stitches in the pattern. A large chart is included with the instruction booklet as a reference tool but the embroidery is worked in the Tissue Paper Transfer Method. The patterns are stitched from step-by-step individual diagrams and there are detailed instructions on how to work the embroidery.

I am offering free correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.

There is a choice of fabrics to work the blackwork design:

  • The original embroidery is worked on 16 count heatherfield fabric which is 100% poly acrylic fabric, it is mottled grey with darker grey and gold flecks. It is a lovely natural looking fabric that compliments the variegated embroidery floss that is used to work the blackwork embroidery and is easy to count.

  • The embroidery can also be worked on 32 count antique white Belfast 100% Linen fabric  with uneven weave threads (different thicknesses) giving a natural look.

  • Or 32 count antique white Monika fabric (50% cotton and 50% Modal). The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness) and is soft and smooth to the touch. The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.

BLACKWORK HORSE 2 HAFLINGER

The blackwork horse is a beginners blackwork kit.

The blackwork horse is worked in blackwork patterns on 16 count or 32 count fabric using embroidery cotton
