DOG PORTRAITS

DOG PORTRAITS: If you would like a portrait of your dog, simply mail me or email me several pictures of your pet and I can choose the best picture and give you a quote for the cost of the embroidery. If you decide that you are not interested in an embroidery I will return your pictures at no charge. My dog portraits are worked in hand embroidery using a single strand of DMC floss in the needle at one time, typically a range of 12 - 20 different coloured threads are used in the whole embroidery. The portrait is worked in long and short stitches, thousands of stitches are worked in the same direction and colour as the fur of the animal that I am working. The stitches catch the light giving the animals fur a glossy look as in nature.

A portrait begins at $650 Canadian dollars for a 4 inch by 4 inch embroidery.

$950 Canadian dollars for a 5 inch by 5 inch embroidery.

$1260 Canadian dollars for a 6 inch by 6 inch embroidery.

$1568 Canadian dollars for a 7 inch by 7 inch embroidery.

Below are some examples of commissions of peoples' pets that I have embroidered from every day photographs. Compare the photograph to the embroidery. If you are looking for a portrait of your animal this is the most realistic medium to capture the lifelikeness of your pet.

To discuss a commission please Contact me there is no obligation or commitment on your part.

Please visit the Needle Painting kits webpage to see animals, birds and flower designs that you can work.

JACK

Jack is a cocker spaniel and one of my favourite breeds of dog. He was my first dog commission. Jack's ears are worked in a long split stitch and his head is worked in long and short stitch. His eyes are deep set and sad but still have life with the embroidered white glint where the light hits his eyes.

The Spaniel is featured in the A-Z of Thread Painting Book by Country Bumpkin Publications and is an advanced project. The book can be purchased from my Books page of my website. I also offer beginners to advanced kits in the Needle Painting technique and suggest you try one of my beginners needle painting kits prior to trying the Spaniel design as the instruction booklet with my beginners kits are very comprehensive enabling you to get a good foundation in the technique.

BAILEY

Bailey is a very hairy sheep dog, whose chest hair is curly. For his chest hair split stitch is worked, for the rest of his fur a long and short stitch is worked.

The photograph that I used to embroider Bailey from, has a cute tilt to his head, but a little to much fur in his eyes.

In the embroidery I made the hair around his eyes a little shorter, so that more of his eyes were showing and I embroidered a couple of white glints to his eyes where the light is reflecting bringing Bailey alive.

Although Bailey is the same size as Jake below, it takes longer to embroider him as there are more colours used and more colour changes to embroider each separate tuft of hair.

I offer beginners to advanced kits in the Needle Painting technique.

JAKE

Jake is a smooth haired pug, with beautiful eyes. Jake is worked in long and short stitches, note the fine brown hairs in his muzzle. These fine details are important to capture the unique character of this animal.

The photograph from which I worked was very dark, I have lightened Jake slightly so that the soft folds of his skin are more visible, giving Jake more dimension.

As there is a limited range of colours in the very dark greys in embroidery floss, I had to dye the darkest grey a little darker so there was an extra grey between the darkest grey and black.

Jake's eyes reflect his surroundings (sky and buildings). It is important to keep his eyes in the embroidery as close to those in the picture so that they are as real to life.

Teko

To see work in progress pictures of Teko and more detailed explanation of how he was worked, click here!

Teko was a very challenging embroidery to do of a dog as he has very curly hair. I started by working the whole of Teko with long and short stitches in shades of off white. When I had his body worked I went back over the top of the body with stem stitch working each curl separately.

OAKLEY

Oakley is a Shih Tzu Bichon cross dog which is a very popular breed of dog in my current place of residence (Calgary).

Oakley is hairy and a fairly challenging dog to embroider as she is all white. It is important when embroidering a white dog to know how dark a shade one can go to give the dog dimension but not to make her look dirty.

Oakley's ears are embroidered in long split stitch, the rest of her body is worked in long and short stitch.

Compare Oakley to Roxy below, they are both the same breed of dog, but their different personalities reflect in their faces making them look like two different dogs.

Roxy is a Shih Tzu Bichon cross and is my mother in laws dog she is a real sweetheart and is loved by everyone in the family. Roxy's ears are worked in long split stitches and the rest of her body is worked in long and short stitches. Her tail is worked in many colours using stem stitch.

BABE

Babe belongs to the same owners as Oakley. Babe is another embroidery challenge. It is important to make Babe's chest look hairy but not dirty.

It is hard to shade the black areas of fur as there is a limited range of colours in the very dark grey or dark brown ranges. Careful choice of colours was necessary to embroider her. Babe is worked in long and short stitches.

Harley and Coco

Harley and Coco are smooth haired chocolate Labrador's.

Very short stitches are used to embroider the fur in the method of long and short stitch. The stitches split into one another resulting in a smooth finish to the embroidery.

I work the dogs eyes last, in this way I can check that their heads are in proportion. If the eyes are put in first they distract me from the rest of the body.

I offer beginners to advanced kits in the Needle Painting technique.
