BEESWAX

Beeswax is used to coat sewing thread. The wax strengthens the thread and gives it a smooth coating which is especially good for goldwork so that the metal threads are less likely to snag on the sewing thread and shred it. It is also used to coat crochet cotton for padding goldwork. The beeswax stiffens the crochet cotton so that when you sew down the crochet cotton padding you do not get uneven thickness to the padding caused by the tension of the stitches on unwaxed crochet cotton.

100% Pure Canadian Beeswax Yellow: I offer several sizes in the 100% pure yellow beeswax . The 100% pure beeswax goes onto sewing thread and crochet cotton smoother than the beeswax in plastic case and has a strong honey scent. Warning if you have an allergy to bee stings, 100% pure beeswax can cause swelling where it comes in contact with the skin.

The small rose is ideal for a few projects.

Beeswax in Plastic Case: I carry a wax that comes in a plastic case with slots, the wax is held with in the case so that the hands do not get coated in the wax and the wax does not get dirty. The thread is run through the slot in the plastic case and is coated in the wax. Brush of any excess wax from the thread before sewing with it. This wax is made from parafin wax and only has a small percentage of beeswax and is good for people with allergies to bee stings. The wax has no scent. It leaves more residue on the sewing thread than the 100% beeswax, which can transfer onto the fabric if not careful.

Beeswax in Plastic Case: $1.59 Canadian Dollars

Turtle Abalone Needle Minder

NEEDLE MINDERS

Needlework Magnets

Beautiful and unique needlework magnets hold your extra needles while stitching your embroidery or cross-stitch. The raised areas of the minders (accept the mini turtle abalone needle minder) are carved out of resin and have remarkable detail.

HOW TO USE THE MINDER

As many of us know it is easier to have 2 or 3 needles on the go at one time when working on an embroidery or cross-stitch so that you can carry the thread from one location on the embroidery to another. When you are not using one of the threads it is easier to leave the thread hanging off the embroidery to one side rather than finishing the thread and having to begin it again later on.

Sometimes when one has several needles on the go the threads become tangled. The best way to prevent this is to place a needle minder on the front of the fabric at the side of the frame, and place the separate magnet on the back of the fabric directly below the needle minder on the front. The minder is held in place by the magnet on the back.  The needle and threads that are not in use can then be brought up to the front of the work and placed on top of the magnetic needle minder to keep the thread out of the way (see picture of needle minder in use on the squirrel embroidery below).

When you turn the frame over to finish a thread off you do not have needles and threads dangling off the embroidery as the needles are held on the minder.

Portion of the Hapsburg Lace Scissors Case worked on Antique Blue Mono Canvas by Tawney Carter

HAPSBURG LACE SCISSORS CASE

This scissors case is for 3 1/2 inch long by 1 3/4 inch wide embroidery scissors such as Gingher embroidery scissors and case can be worked by all levels of embroiderers, if you enjoy counted thread such as cross-stitch you will enjoy working the scissors case.

The stitches are worked in pearl cotton on an 18 count mono canvas. In the example opposite white pearl cotton is worked on 18 count brown coloured mono canvas.

Lacy Hapsburg lace stitches are worked leaving spaces between the patterns for ribbons to be inserted. Beads are sewn down to emphasize some areas of the case. Each pattern is charted out and explained in detail how it is worked.

This scissors case looks great worked in any coloured mono canvas with a contrasting pearl cotton colour. See the other Hapsburg lace designs on this webpage to see the different colour canvas and threads that can be used.

HAPSBURG BOOKMARK / MINI SAMPLER

This bookmark can be worked by beginner to advanced embroiderers, if you enjoy counted thread such as cross-stitch you will enjoy working the bookmark.

The bookmark is worked using pearl cottons on an 18 count mono canvas. In the example opposite white pearl cottons have been embroidered onto 18 count antique blue mono canvas.

The lacy stitches are worked in rows, taking care not to cross the threads over open holes at the back of the canvas because the lacy effect would be lost. Ribbons are inserted between some rows of the Hapsburg lace patterns to give a touch of colour. Each pattern is charted out and explained in detail how it is worked.

The bookmark looks great using any coloured mono canvas with a contrasting pearl cotton colour, I offer antique blue or natural (brown) canvas (see the sampler for the natural brown colour) in my kit with white pearl cotton and pale blue and pale pink ribbons.

If you purchase the instruction booklet alone you can choose your own colour canvas and contrasting pearl cotton thread (more than one colour can be used) and different colour ribbon and beads to give your bookmark a unique look.

FLOWERS, BUTTERFLIES AND CANADIAN FLAG

The flowers, butterflies and Canada flag are for any levels of stitchers. The easiest of the designs is the black and red butterfly 3 and the hardest of the designs is the Canada Flag.

Working the embroidery: The Shadow Work stitch is a simple backstitch worked on the front of the work alternating back and forth along two lines that are parallel to each other (bands), on the back of the work herringbone is created by the stitches crossing from one edge of the band to the other. The herringbone shows through the fabric at the front of the work as an opaque band. The ends of the threads are easily finished off in the stitches at the back of the work so that they do not show up obviously in the embroidery. Each design can be displayed in a card window mat or in a clear perspex frame or in a clear perspex key ring (please see the pictures on the left and below). Each of these frames can be purchased separately below and mounting instructions are included in the booklet.

The instructions includes diagrams for working the herringbone stitch and finishing ends and an enlarged picture of the back of the embroidery so you can see how the herringbone stitch lays. I also explain how to mount the embroidery can be mounted so that the embroidery can be displayed from both sides.

I am offering free email correspondence and free on going critique for this kit, for more details go to - Free on going critique.
