DMC METALLIC EMBROIDERY THREAD

DMC Metallic embroidery thread is a twisted cord.

The thread is synthetic so will not tarnish and makes a good alternative to the Elizabethan Twist.

For a picture and description of how the DMC Twist can be used Click Here.

The DMC metallic thread is good for filling in shapes in the couching method. It can also be used in blackwork and other embroidery techniques as a highlight. The three strands of the twist can be separated and sewn down singularly.

JAPANESE THREADS

I offer several choices in the Japanese Threads.

Japanese thread is made up of a metal foil wrapped around a thread core. Japanese threads are usually couched down two threads at the time (as it fills in the design area faster) and couched down with the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting thread in a bricking fashion. If sewn down with a contrasting thread the Japanese thread can be couched down in colour in a pattern or with a range of shades, this is known as Or Nue. For a picture and description of how the Japanese thread can be used Click Here.

The Japanese threads are most commonly used for filling in flat areas on a design in the couching method. The threads come in gold which has a shiny reflective surface or burnished gold which has mat surface and an antique appearance. The Japanese threads are synthetic thread so will not tarnish.

JAPANESE GOLD THREAD

Threads range from No. 13 being the largest to No. 8 being the smallest. The Japanese threads are the goldest in colour and with the glossiest surface. The foil wrapped around the thread core is sturdy and is less likely to untwist.

  • No. 13 (K1): Approximately 1 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 12 (K2): Approximately 0.85 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 9 (K3): Approximately 0.70 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 8 (K4): Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

T69 - T72 IMITATION JAPAN THREAD

Imitation Japan Threads range from T69 being the largest to T72 being the smallest. The threads are burnished so have an antique look with a mat surface.

  • T69: Approximately 0.75 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T70: Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T71: Approximately 0.25 mm across the width of the thread.

  • T72: Approximately 0.15 mm across the width of the thread.

KREINIK IMITATION JAPAN THREAD

Kreinik Imitation Japan Threads range from No. 7 being the largest to No. 1 being the smallest. The Kreinik Japan threads are similar to the (K1), (K3) and (K4) Japanese threads but with a slightly softer foil which is not as firmly wrapped.

  • No. 7: Approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.

  • No. 5: Approximately 0.25 mm across the width of the thread, comes as a skein or spool.

  • No. 1 and Cord: Approximately 0.1 mm across the width of the thread. Used to couch down the Japan threads and suitable for machine embroidery and to use in combination with other embroidery threads to add sparkle.

JAPANESE THREADS COSTS

Orders of 10 yards of Japanese threads will come in a resealable plastic bag to reduce mailing costs. Japanese threads over 10 Yards will come in separate bags of 10 yards.

If you wish the Japanese thread to come wrapped on a plastic spool (No. 8 - No. 13 and T69 - T70 Japan threads only), please let me know in special notes on the order form when checking out. There is no charge for the plastic spool but parcel mail will apply due to the bulkiness of the spool.

You may wish to purchase the Japanese Koma below to wrap the Japan thread on yourself - parcel mail applies.

JAPANESE KOMA

The Japanese Koma is a traditional wooden reel that the Japan thread is wrapped onto to keep the thread from tangling.

No. 13 PASSING THREADS

I have Gold, Silver, Copper, Blue, Green, and Red No. 13 Passing thread which is a synthetic thread wrapped around a thread core so the thread will not tarnish unlike the gold 2% WM, gilt, silver and copper smooth passing threads which are metal based and will tarnish over time. The thread is straight and smooth in appearance and turns corners easily when using fine tipped tweezers. Passing is couched down singularly in the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting colour. For a picture and description of how the Smooth Passing thread can be used Click Here.

Passing thread can be used for couching and underside couching on Or Nue designs.

SIZE

Approximately 1 mm across the width of the thread.

The No. 13 Passing is a synthetic thread so will not tarnish.

STANDARD LUREX THREAD

The Dark Gold Standard Lurex Thread No. 371, Silver Lurex Thread No. 380 and Copper Lurex Thread No. 371 are very similar to Passing thread but with a synthetic thread wrapped around a cotton core instead of a real metal thread.

The great thing with this thread is that it does not tarnish but has the appearance of a real metal thread.

The thread is straight and smooth in appearance and turns corners easily when using fine tipped tweezers. The thread can be used in the same method as couching down Smooth Passing. For a picture and description of how the Smooth Passing thread can be used Click Here.

This is a suitable goldwork thread for the plaited braid stitch and for filling areas in couching and for Or Nue where you do not want the thread to tarnish.

SIZE

Approximately 0.35 mm across the width of the thread - Same size as No. 4 Passing Thread. Synthetic thread so will not tarnish, good alternative to passing thread.
