BOHIN TRANSFER PENCIL (WHITE AND GREY LEAD)

The bohin transfer pencil is a mechanical pencil that comes with white and grey 0.9 mm lead.

A mechanical pencil is the best type of pencil to use to draw design lines onto fabric as the lead keeps a consistent sharp nib. This pencil is perfect to use with the prick and pounce transfer method.

BLUE CHALK IRON-ON TRANSFER PENCIL

Use this blue chalk pencil to transfer a design from tracing paper to fabric.

Trace your design onto the velum tracing paper. Note that the design will be reversed when you iron the design onto the fabric.

Place the tracing paper with the design down against the cotton fabric and then iron evenly along the back of the tracing paper, applying firm pressure for about 6 to 8 pass-overs.

When you lift the tracing paper off the fabric you are left with a blue outline of your design. The transfer is permanent.

You can get two or three transfers from the same piece of tracing paper. The two pictures below show the first and second iron on transfers. Note on the first transfer I did not apply even pressure across the whole design so the bottom of the tulip is faded. The second transfer is not as strong in colour as the first transfer and I found that the third transfer came out very faint.

ERASABLE PENS

I sell two types of erasable pens:

  1. The water erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. Use the pen for drawing embroidery designs onto fabric. When the embroidery is complete the blue pen line can be washed away. On rare occasions certain dyes in material (dyes containing red in particular) may make marks difficult to remove. If you do not want to wash your fabric then the air erasable pen can be used instead.

  2. The air erasable marking pen has a pin-point tip that produces a very fine line. The fine line marking pen makes a bright purple mark, the marks will vanish without washing, but do not iron the over the marks as it will set the marks and they cannot be removed.

POUNCE AND POUNCING TOOL

You can purchase the pounce and the pouncing tool (pattern pounce) individually or as a set.

Pounce is used in the prick and pounce method of transferring embroidery designs onto fabric, (Applique, Brazilian, Free Embroidery,  Goldwork, Needle Painting, Modern Jacobean, Traditional Jacobean and White Work).

The pricked tracing paper is centralized on to fabric (smooth side up), see velum tracing paper above, for the transfer paper used. The tracing paper is held in place with weights on the corners of the tracing paper or by pinning the tracing paper to the fabric.

The Pattern Pounce (pouncing tool) is used for transferring patterns from the pricked tracing paper pattern to the fabric. The Pattern Pounce consists of a felt pad on a wood support and is double headed with a 1" pad on one end and a 3/4" pad on the other.

The pattern pounce is dipped into the pounce and the excess pounce is tapped back into the container, the pounce is rubbed over the whole of the design taking care not to go over the edges of the tracing paper. The tracing paper is carefully lifted away leaving a pounce outline of the design on the fabric.

Excess pounce on the fabric is blown away, then the pounce lines are drawn over with lead pencil or white pencil, depending on the colour of the fabric, see bohin pencil above, or painted over with permanent paint i.e. acrylics or oils.

Any remaining pounce on the fabric is removed by tapping the back of the work and brushing the remainder of the pounce away with a baby brush or cotton wool puff - brushing in towards the design.

Extra pounce on the tracing paper can be transferred back into the container.

18 Grams of Pounce (1 tub) at least 100 x transfers from 10 inch by 10 inch prickings.

WOODEN PRICKER

STEEL PRICKER

A pricker is used to prick the lines on the velum tracing paper for the transfer method of prick and pounce. A No. 10 embroidery needle or similar size needle is screwed into the end of the pricker. The wooden or metal shaft is a devise to hold the needle enabling easier pricking of the design lines on the velum tracing paper.

PRICKER DETAILS

WOODEN PRICKER: The pricker is made out of hardwood with brass needle holder and thumb set screw. Takes sizes No. 2 - No. 10 Crewel Needles.

Length of pricker: 4 3/4 inches (11 1/2 cm)

STEEL PRICKER: The pricker is made out of a thin chrome plated brass handle with 4-jaw steel chuck on one end permitting easy exchange of needle, needles can be screwed tightly into the pricker. Takes sizes No. 9 and No. 10 Crewel Needles.

Length of pricker: 3 3/4 inches (9 1/2 cm)

PRICKER NEEDLES

Sizes No. 9 and No. 10 embroidery needles are most commonly used for pricking the velum tracing paper. Larger embroidery needles can be used but the holes made by these needles are larger and will allow more pounce onto the fabric when transferring the design onto the fabric.

TRANSFER GAUZE WITH TRANSFER PEN

An easy way to transfer a design from paper to fabric without the need of a light box.

Place the fine fabric gauze over your design and trace the design onto the the gauze using the water erasable pen (the blue ink of the pen will go through the fabric gauze and onto your design so take a photo-copy of your design if you do not want it to be touched with the blue ink).

Place fabric gauze with the traced design onto the fabric (no need to flip the design). Trace over the lines again and the blue ink goes through the fabric gauze to leave an outline of your design on the fabric.

The blue ink is water erasable so once the embroidery is complete simply wash the embroidery to remove the blue ink. The fabric gauze can be used again by washing the gauze in cold water and laying flat to dry on a towel.

There are three sheets of fabric gauze in the kit size - 12 inch by 20 inch (30 cm by 50cm). Instructions come in English and French.

VELUM TRACING PAPER

Velum tracing paper is used for the prick and pounce method of transferring embroidery designs (Applique, Brazilian, Free Embroidery,  Goldwork, Needle Painting, Modern Jacobean, Traditional Jacobean and White Work) onto fabric. The Velum tracing paper is placed over the design to be worked and all the lines of the design are traced onto the tracing paper.

A No. 10 embroidery needle is used to prick holes along all the pencil lines on the tracing paper puncturing the design lines at 1/8th of and inch (3 mm) intervals, when all the lines have been pricked the tracing paper is held up to the light to check that all the lines have been pricked. Horizontal and vertical center lines are drawn onto the pricking in preparation of positioning the pricking onto the fabric. (See pounce below, for pouncing the design onto the fabric).
