Materials Required For the Whole Sampler

Materials can be purchased individually by clicking on the links to see the product information or by purchasing a kit of the Passing Design  |  Heart Design  |  Fleur De Lys  |  Plate Design or the Goldwork Sampler (all of the designs in one kit).

Fabric: For all four designs you will need a piece of silk Noil 20 inch (50 cm) square. For the passing design alone you will need a piece of silk Noil 11 inch (27.5 cm) square. You can substitute the silk Noil with cotton velveteen fabric, silk Matka or any fabric that has a closely woven pile and is fairly sturdy.

Backing Fabric: A piece of muslin fabric (100% cotton) to go behind the fabric for added strength (same size as the silk fabric).

Felt: Piece of yellow felt approximately 8 1/2 inch by 11 inch (21 cm by 27 cm) for the center design.

Yellow String: Yellow string or crochet cotton (5 meters) to pad areas of the Heart Design and the Fleur De Lys.

Thread: Two reels of yellow polyester sewing thread either Guttermans No. 850 or Mettler No. 767 or match the gold to the closest yellow thread available.

Silk Thread: Two skeins of red Au Ver A Soie, Soie D'alger No. 916 (2 meters is required) is used for the red drops. You can substitute a different colour or different brand of silk thread such as Madeira silk thread or the DMC floss.

Japanese Thread: 1 skein of Japanese Gold thread No. 7 (10 meters is required) to work the heart. You can substitute with Gold 2% Smooth Passing No. 5 or Gilt Smooth Passing No. 5.

Spangles (Pailettes): 114 spangles (spangles are sequins) to sew on the Heart Design and the Plate Design.

Twist: 5 1/2 yards (5 1/4 meters) of Gold 2% WM No. 1 Twist is used to outline the red drops. On the Heart Design and to for areas of the Plate Design. You can substitute with Gilt No. 1 Twist or No. 1 ½ Twist. You could also use Super Pearl Purl or No. 5 Smooth Passing.

Passing: 6 yards (5 1/2 meters) of Gold 2% WM No. 5 Passing thread is used for the center of the design. You can substitute with Gilt No. 5 Passing thread or No. 7 Japanese gold thread.

Pearl Purl: 64" inches (160cm) of Gold 2% WM Super Pearl Purl is used to outline the passing on the Passing Design and for leaf outlines, veins and stems on the Heart Design. You could substitute with Gilt Pearl Purl Super or No. 1 or No. 1 ½ Twist.

Fine Rococco: 3 1/2 yards of Gilt Fine Rococco to work the leaves. You can substitute with  Crinkle Cordonnet or  No. 1 Twist or No. 1 ½ Twist or.

Check Purl: 25 inches (62 1/2 cm) of Gold 2% Check Purl No. 6 to work areas of the Fleur De Lys. You can substitute with Gilt Check Purl No. 6.

Rough Purl: 20 inches (50cm) of Gold 2% Rough Purl No. 6  to work areas of the Fleur De Lys. You can substitute with Gilt Smooth Purl No. 6.

Smooth Purl: 98 inches (245 cm) of Gold 2% Smooth Purl No. 6 to work areas of the Fleur De Lys and to couch down spangles on the Plate Design. You can substitute with Gilt Smooth Purl No. 6.

Milliary Wire: 36 inches (39 cm) of Gilt Milliary Wire to outline the center and arms of the plate design. You can substitute with Super Pearl Purl or Pearl Purl No. 1

Whipped Plate: 30 inches (75cm) of Whipped Plate to work areas of the Plate Design. You can substitute with Gold 2% WM Broad Plate No. 6.

Broad Plate: 30 inches (75cm) of Gold 2% Broad Plate No. 6 to work areas of the Plate Design. You can substitute with Whipped Plate.

A Pair of Embroidery Scissors.

A Sharp Pair of Inexpensive Scissors: for cutting gold threads which can dull the scissors blades. The blades of the scissors need to be small and pointed for cutting precision.

Tweezers: A pair of very fine tipped tweezers used to bend and hold the gold threads.

Tracing Paper, Pounce and Pricker: Further explanation in 'how to transfer a design'.

A Stretcher Bar Frame: The frame is made up of wooden bars that are sold in pairs, with the end of the bars having teeth so that you can slot the bars together. The fabric is pinned onto the bars of the frame using thumb tacks. You would require a 17" stretcher bar frame to work the whole Goldwork sampler or a 10" stretcher bar frame to work the one design.

Thumb Tacks: To pin fabric onto the stretcher bars.

No. 10 Embroidery Needle and No. 18 Embroidery Needle.

Bees Wax: To coat the polyester thread before sewing down the gold threads, helps strengthen the thread so that the gold is less likely to shred the thread.


Work in Progress Pictures and Brief Explanation

    Outline

    The outline of the design is transferred onto the silk fabric using the prick and pounce method.

    The prick and pounce method is explained in the instructions for each of the four designs


    Sewing Down String and Felt For Padding

    The Passing Design has a layer of felt sewn down for the center of the design.

    The Heart Design has a piece of felt sewn down for each leaf and string sewn down across the heart at string width intervals.

    The Fleur De Lys design has string sewn down in areas in preparation for purl threads to be sewn over the top to give a raised effect.

    The Plate Design has a layers of felt sewn down for the center design and the balls.


Silk Pearl Purl and Milliary Wire

    The Passing Design has red silk thread for the drops worked in satin stitch.

    Areas of the Fleur De Lys has red silk worked in long and short stitch.

    The Heart Design has Pearl Purl sewn down for veins and stems of the leaves.

    The Plate Design has Milliary Wire sewn down around the center design and the side arms.


    Passing, Japanese Threads

    The center of the passing design is worked in Passing thread.

    The heart is worked in vertical rows of Japanese threads couched down at intervals using the red silk thread forming a red heart pattern within the laid Japanese threads.

    The leaf stem tendrils of the Heart Design are worked in Pearl Purl.


    Twists, Spangles and Cords

    The red satin stitch drops of the Passing Design are outlined with a gold twist. A spangle is sewn down in the rounded end of the satin stitch drop.

    The heart is outlined in a hand made red silk cord.

    The arms of the Plate Design are embroidered in red silk thread in long and short stitch.


    Rococco and Plates

    The leaves on the Heart Design are worked in Rococco and outlined in Pearl Purl.

    The center and the bottom triangle of the Plate Design have sections of laid plate.

     


    Completed Piece

    The Fleur De Lys Design is worked in smooth, rough and check purl over the string padding.

    The Plate Design has rows of gold twist sewn around the couched down plate. Spangles are sewn down for each of the round balls attached down with a bead of smooth purl, each of the red arms also have spangles sewn up the center anchored down with a bead of smooth purl.
