This
museum quality acid free tissue paper is a must, to wrap stitched
pieces, art work, embroidery threads metal threads and valuable
fabrics in when storing them away.
The
acid free tissue paper is non buffered and lignin free.
Difference
Between Buffered and
Non Buffered: Buffered
tissue is opaque white and has a slightly chalky feel. This is due
to the buffering agent, known as calcium carbonate that is added to
the paper to prolong its acid-free quality - I do no supply the
buffered tissue paper. Non
buffered:
does not have acid buffers or an acid reserve. It is softer to the
touch and more fibrous in appearance. It was developed specifically
for use with silk and wool textiles, in case the calcium carbonate in
the buffered tissue paper could be harmful to these materials.
What is Lignin:
Lignin is a component of the cell walls of plants, along with
cellulose. Lignin is largely responsible for the strength and
rigidity of plants, but its presence in paper and board is believed
to contribute to chemical degradation.
If
a stitched piece is stored in a drawer, box, sheet or tissue paper
that is not acid free, over the years the acid in these
materials seep into the fabric and stitches of the piece and
gradually rot the fibres. First indication that acid is affecting the
piece, is the fabric or threads develop brown stains as if they are
water or rust marked. As time goes on the affected area starts
deteriorating and holes develop, the stitches in the work thin out
and break.
Wrapping
stitched pieces, embroidery threads, treasured fabrics, artist
pictures and metal threads in acid free tissue will help curb acid
migration and preserve non-replaceable heirlooms. I offer
museum-quality Acid Free Tissue Paper for all your conservation needs.
