The Grizzly Bear is worked in the method of needle painting which is the blending of straight long and short stitches using different shades of DMC floss.

The embroidery is worked on a off white muslin fabric in a 9 inch by 9 inch stretcher bar frame. The fabric is pinned onto the stretcher bar frame so that it is drum tight.

The embroidery is worked from the background to the foreground so that a dimensional picture is created. I used one strand of DMC floss in the needle at the time.

  1. The design is transferred onto the fabric using the prick and pounce method.

  2. The neck of the bear is worked in rows of long and short stitch across the width of the neck beginning at the bottom of the neck working up to the jaw.

  3. The long and short stitch is stopped at the jaw line.

  4. The ears of the bear are worked in rows of long and short stitch beginning at the top of the ear.

  1. The face is worked in long and short stitch beginning at the back of the head.

  2. A layer of satin stitch is worked for the eye and then the long and short stitch for the face is continued around the eye.

  3. The long and short stitch is completed on the muzzle. The nostrils and pupil are worked in satin stitch.

  4. The nose is worked in split stitch and then details are added to the eye and extra stitches to the fur to give the fur dimension.
