You are keeping the stitches a good length, just make sure that you keep your stitches closer together on the outside of the split stitch line. Can you take out the last stitch and position it closer to the previous stitch, you can also fill in a space where I’ve drawn the pink line and then you can complete the first row off satin stitch and start on the second row. Work a few stitches on the second row and then post a picture so I can check the position and length of the stitches,
