Yes you need to fill in that section on the right, the instructions for this is on page 15 of the PDF file lesson 2 at the bottom of the page, I have drawn the stitches on your picture in blue. It was supposed to be worked before row 6 but that is OK you can do it now. You can also fill in some stitches on row 6 which I have drawn in pink.
The stitches on the edge of the body look fine, you can take every other stitch even further over the split stitch line on the edge of the body if you want a very feathery look.
