I do not try to line up the dark in the three color row (row 4) with the dark colour in the previous row (row 3) as you would get stripes.
I do work the colours in the following sequence in row 4, dark, medium, light, medium, dark, medium, light, medium, dark and I try to avoid using the lightest of the grey against the darkest of the grey, so avoiding: dark, medium, dark, light, medium, dark, light.
When you are working the dark sections in the row with three colors (row 4) you may get a dark section in the row against the dark section in the previous row (row 3) when you are working the dark, medium, light, medium, dark, medium, light, medium, dark sequence, but it will not affect the overall look of the embroidery.
