Acid Free Boxes
$39.65 – $62.95 USD
The acid free archival box is constructed of heavy weight acid free, lignin-free, non buffered board. The box opens flat so it is easy to organize items. The box is great for storing stitched items to ensure they are safe from acid leaching into the embroidery rotting it, which could happen if stored in non acid free containers.

What is the effect of Acid: If a stitched piece is stored in a drawer, box, sheet or tissue paper that is not acid free, over the years the acid in these materials seep into the fabric and stitches of the piece and gradually rot the fibres. First indication that acid is affecting the piece, is the fabric or threads develop brown stains as if they are water or rust marked. As time goes on the affected area starts deteriorating and holes develop, the stitches in the work thin out and break.
Difference Between Buffered and Non Buffered: Buffering is the use of a agent known as calcium carbonate that is added to the paper to prolong its acid-free quality – There is no long term research on the effects of calcium carbonate on fabrics and threads. Non buffered: Does not have any additives to the acid free box.
What is Lignin: Lignin is a component of the cell walls of plants, along with cellulose. Lignin is largely responsible for the strength and rigidity of plants, but its presence in paper and board is believed to contribute to chemical degradation.
Store items such as work-in-progress embroideries and cross-stitch, completed items such as napkins, linens and fabrics and threads. For items that require folding I suggest rolling acid free tissue paper and placing it in the folds of the fabric so that creases do not form.
The boxes are not suitable for wedding dresses are they are too shallow.
