What is the effect of Acid: If a stitched piece is stored in a drawer, box, sheet or tissue paper that is not acid free, over the years the acid in these materials seep into the fabric and stitches of the piece and gradually rot the fibres. First indication that acid is affecting the piece, is the fabric or threads develop brown stains as if they are water or rust marked. As time goes on the affected area starts deteriorating and holes develop, the stitches in the work thin out and break.

Difference Between Buffered and Non Buffered: Buffering is the use of a agent known as calcium carbonate that is added to the paper to prolong its acid-free quality – There is no long term research on the effects of calcium carbonate on fabrics and threads. Non buffered: Does not have any additives to the acid free box.

What is Lignin: Lignin is a component of the cell walls of plants, along with cellulose. Lignin is largely responsible for the strength and rigidity of plants, but its presence in paper and board is believed to contribute to chemical degradation.
