What is Schwalm Embroidery?

Schwalm embroidery, pronounced “shvalm”, is a regional or folk embroidery which comes from, and is named after, the Schwalm River Valley, in the state of Hesse in North Central Germany.

In Germany the embroidery is called “Schwalmer Weisstickerei” which means, “white stitchery from the Schwalm”. It is a beautiful form of whitework embroidery traditionally worked on white evenweave linen with white thread.

Techniques include some surface embroidery, drawn threadwork, pulled threadwork, needlelace and hemstitching. The most commonly used motifs are hearts, tulips, circles and doves with curving lines and lovely festoons.
