The brass stiletto is my favourite tool for enlarging holes at the center of eyelets when working my Hapsburg Lace designs.

The brass stiletto is a lovely smooth and sturdy tool that can also be used to enlarge holes in the ground fabric of the embroidery to enable a large sewing needle to pass through the fabric easier or for taking the ends of embroidery thread to the back of the work in goldwork embroidery.

The stiletto can also be used as a laying tool.

The brass stiletto has its own brass cover to protect the point.

The Famore precision micro tip tweezers are a wonderful tool. The tweezers are smooth and comfortable to use, they are forged in Germany stainless steel and hand ground for precision and accuracy. This shorter length tweezers is perfect for small projects, where you need to get your fingers closer to the fabric for more accurate use.

Great for taking out tacking threads in blackwork, manipulating metal threads in goldwork embroidery and removing unwanted threads in hand embroidery.

These luxurious tweezers have padded thumb and finger grips and a fine bent tip to get into the most awkward positions.

They make great unpicking tools to grab those tiny threads your finger nails just can’t keep a hold of.
They are also an ideal tool for Goldwork embroidery to hold, position and to manipulate metal threads.

Needles – Size 12 Crewel Embroidery

The size 12 crewel embroidery needle can be used for fine surface embroidery techniques where one single strand of embroidery thread is used such as needle painting, goldwork and fine white work.

The needle has a long eye and a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.

I recommend using the size 12 crewel embroidery needles for sewing down down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads as the purl threads are a very narrow gold tube that other needles may not fit through.

Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.

The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.

Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.

Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.

For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Chenille Needles have a large eye and a sharp point and are great for ribbon embroidery and as a plunging needle for goldwork embroidery. Chenille needles can also be used for heavy surface embroidery such as crewel and Mountmellick. I carry a variety packet in which the needles range from size 18 (largest) to size 24 (smallest) and I sell the No. 18 chenille needle separately for goldwork embroidery.
