Twists also know as Torsades are cords that are made up of three strands. Each individual strand is made up of a fine metal wired wrapped around a fibre core. The three strands are twisted into a cord. The cords can be used as filling thread or an outlining thread.

Visit the Metal Thread Information page of my website for further information and pictures on how the thread can be used on an embroidery and FAQ about metal threads.

I have many sizes of twists ranging from very fine to thick in gold, silver and copper:

  • Elizabethan Twist is the finest of the twists and is approximately 0.25 mm across the width of the thread.
  • Super Twist is approximately 0.35 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 1 Twist is approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No 1 1/2 Twist is approximately 0.7 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 2 Twist is approximately 0.8 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 3 Twist is approximately 0.9 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 4 Twist is approximately 1 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 6 Twist is the thickest of the twists that I carry and is approximately 1.2 mm across the width of the thread.

Twisted cords are made up of three individual strands. Each individual strand is made up of a fine metal wired wrapped around a fibre core. The wire is copper based with a gold, silver or copper plating and will tarnish over time. The three strands are twisted into a cord. The cords can be used as filling thread or an outlining thread.

Twists are couched down by sewing the stitch at the same angle as the twist of the cord with the stitch hidden in the middle of the cord so it is invisible or the twists can be couched down with a stitch over the cord at a 90 degree angle.

Visit the Metal Thread Information page of my website for further information and pictures on how the thread can be used on an embroidery and FAQ about metal threads.

Large Back comes in one size and is similar to passing thread but much thicker (approximately 1.25 mm across the width of the thread) and is great for outlining.

The thread is rounded and smooth in appearance and turns corners easily when using a fine tipped tweezers. Large Back is couched down singularly in the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting colour.

Tambour thread is a fine real metal thread that can be used for couching down other metal threads such as Check Thread, Flatworm, Japan Thread, Large Back, Passing Thread, Rococco and Starndard Lurex Thread.

It can also be used in combination with other embroidery threads for surface embroidery, counted thread embroidery, weaving and lace making to add sparkle.

If you want an alternative synthetic thread that will not tarnish then you can use the Kreinik No. 1 Japan Thread.

I am discontinuing sizes 3 – 10 of the Wire Bullion as the thread is the larger bullion’s and are not so commonly used and I want to free up some workroom space. I am selling the thread at 50% off. The threads are great for large embroideries, modern and experimenting and are high quality.

Available in Gilt and Silver.

Wire Bullions are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube with a smooth and dull (matte) surface.

The tube is cut up into chips (beads) and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden and can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension.
