Crochet Cotton for Padding
Crochet Cotton for Padding
$1.75 USD
A soft cotton thread (Bernat crochet cotton) is used to pad narrow areas on goldwork designs such as leaves, stems and branches.
The crochet cotton should be waxed first with beeswax so that it is coated and stiff and can be sewn down single or in bundles of two, three or more strands, sewing down the strands with a single strand of polyester sewing thread.
Metal threads such as purls, bullions and Japan threads can be sewn over the crochet cotton padding raising the threads and giving the embroidery a dimensional effect.

Bullion – Rough Purl
Price Per Yard. Available in Gold 2%, Gilt, Silver, Copper and a variety of colours.
Rough Purls are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube with a dull (matte) surface.
The tube is cut up into chips (beads) and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden and can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension,
I recommend ordering enough for your project as each manufacturing batch can differ slightly in colour.

Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.
