The Jacobean linen twill fabric is the traditional fabric used for Jacobean crewel embroidery and is woven in Scotland. The fabric is stiff and heavy and can be used for embroidered tapestries, drapes, pictures, fire screens and cushions.
This traditional Jacobean Linen Twill fabric has the characteristic diagonal weave on both sides of the fabric.
Colour: Natural (Biscuit) – Closest to DMC Embroidery Cotton Colour No. 822 (slightly darker than ecru)

The Jacobean Tree with Bird is an advanced crewel surface embroidery technique. If you are new to the technique you may want to try a smaller design first as this design is large and will take some time to stitch.
The design uses traditional Jacobean motifs and is stitched in 14 traditional Jacobean colours in Appleton crewel wool on traditional linen twill fabric. The design comes printed on the fabric so you do not have to be concerned about transferring the design yourself.

The Jacobean linen twill fabric is the traditional fabric used for Jacobean crewel embroidery and is woven in Scotland.
The fabric is stiff and heavy and can be used for embroidered tapestries, drapes, pictures, fire screens and cushions.
This traditional Jacobean Linen Twill fabric has the characteristic diagonal weave on both sides of the fabric.
Before stitching on the fabric it should be washed by hand, in hand hot water, soaked for a while and then rinsed so that the stiffening is removed from the fabric. Fabric shrinkage after washing is 8 to 10% on length and 6 to 8% on width, each weaving is unique because the raw fibre varies so much so shrinkage may differ slightly. The fabric can be ironed dry on the back of the fabric.

Magnifiers – Magni-clips
The magni-clips are magnifiers that clip onto the bridge of your glasses, they can be flipped up when not in use and put down over your glasses for close up work.
The magni-clips are light weight and rimless so as not to distract from your stitching. Excellent for all types of hand embroidery and close up work.

Stretcher Bar Frames
Stretcher bars are inexpensive wooden embroidery frames in which the fabric can be pulled really tight. The end of the bars have teeth that you slot together to form a frame at any size that you require for your needlework. I recommend the stretcher bar frames to work my hand embroidery kits in because they are very quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame.
I highly recommend purchasing the brass thumb tacks which are stronger and sharper than office supplies thumb tacks or quilters thumb tacks.

Needle Threaders
Wire needle threaders are for all sizes of needles but are most useful for fine needles as it enables you to thread the really small eyed needles easier.
The metal wire loop of the needle threader is threaded into the eye of the needle (much easier than threading in a strand of thread), the thread is then threaded into the wire loop of the threader and then the wire loop and embroidery thread are pulled back through the eye of the needle, the thread is now threaded into the needle.

Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.
