Guttermans polyester sewing thread is used to sew down felt and crochet cotton and the majority of metal threads in goldwork embroidery. The polyester sewing thread is used over cotton or silk as it will not rot over time and is strong and not stretchy.

Yellow thread is used to sew down gold metal threads, grey thread for silver metal threads and brown for copper metal threads.

The thread is used double to sew down bullion and purl threads and is used single for sewing down padding other metal threads.

The thread is strong to securely sew down metal threads and fine so blends in well with metal threads so does not become a feature when a similar colour polyester sewing thread to the metal thread is used.

The Silk Noil is a natural silk that has a rough/bobbly surface and is good for goldwork embroidery and is available in off white and black.

I recommend backing the silk fabric with Southern Belle Muslin fabric for added support.

Au ver A Soie is the manufacturer of fine silk thread and yarns in France since 1820.

I have two weights of the Soie silk threads which are great for sewing down metal threads.

Crochet Cotton for Padding

<a href="https://berlinembroidery.com/product-category/hand-embroidery-supplies/goldwork-supplies/goldwork-sewing-and-padding-supplies/" rel="tag">Goldwork Sewing and Padding Supplies</a>

A soft cotton thread (Bernat crochet cotton) is used to pad narrow areas on goldwork designs such as leaves, stems and branches.

The crochet cotton should be waxed first with beeswax so that it is coated and stiff and can be sewn down single or in bundles of two, three or more strands, sewing down the strands with a single strand of polyester sewing thread.

Metal threads such as purls, bullions and Japan threads can be sewn over the crochet cotton padding raising the threads and giving the embroidery a dimensional effect.
