Class Description:

The miniature landscape needle painting online class is suitable for all levels of stitchers and is written with the beginner in mind. Whether you are a complete beginner in the needle painting technique or want to brush up on your skills, this is the class for you.

Needle painting is a surface embroidery technique so there are no worries about having to count the threads of the fabric. The landscape design comes transferred onto the fabric for you and you will stitch within the design lines. The landscape is worked in a single strand of DMC embroidery cotton in four shades for the blue mountains and four shades for the green fields in the method of split stitch and long and short stitch. The tree is worked in split stitch in black YLI silk thread. The landscape is outlined in pearl purl couched down with a single strand of black YLI silk thread.

Four separate online class lessons are posted in PDF files on the online class forum in May, which you can access at any time until the class ends on Monday 31st of August 2020. Starting late will not affect your learning experience.

The PDF files have lots of work-in-progress colour photos and additional tips to work the embroidery.

I am releasing the PDF files close together for people who stitch fast or have a time constraint but you have until the end of August to work on your landscape and post pictures and questions in the forum so you can work at your own pace.

When the PDF lesson is posted on the forum will be able to download the file and print off the lesson. The lesson will remain on my forum from the posting date to end of August.

There is no audio aspect with the online class but there is the opportunity to correspond with me for tips for working the embroidery. There will also some videos for the various methods of working split stitch courtesy of Mary Corbet of NeedlenThread.

As part of the online class I critique your embroidery as you work on it.

This means that when you post a picture on the forum or email me a picture of your work, I will give you constructive feedback on what you are doing well or where you may need to make changes. I will draw and write on the picture of you embroidery showing where you may need to make changes or where you are doing well on the embroidery.

I like to post the pictures with the critique on the forum as it is very beneficial to all participants taking the online class to review and apply to their own work. You do not have to participate in the critique if you do not want to.

There are a variety of ways that the landscape embroidery can be finished and displayed. The landscape can be displayed in the traditional fashion in a frame, with or without a mat. The fabric is 9 inch square so there is lots of fabric around the design for framing. Or the landscape can be finished on a small piece of acid free board and displayed on a miniature black easel (see picture in photo gallery) or it can be displayed in a frame so that it is raised above a coloured mat (see black frame in photo gallery). There is a finishing kit with the miniature black easel available to purchase and there will be instructions for finishing the embroidery in the third lesson of the class.

The online class ends on August 31st 2020 giving the student plenty of time to complete the project. There are approximately 16 hours stitching time on the embroidery.

Recommended Supplies:

PDF Files Only and Online Class Forum Option:

You can get the PDF files only and still join the online class forum, below are some important things to consider if you going to provide your own supplies.

The instruction booklet that normally comes with the kit will be emailed as a PDF file, you will need to print off the design from the instructions and trace it onto suitable fabric. The design is detailed and small and quite fiddly to trace on by hand.  If you purchase the kit I will have done the design transfer for you and as I am experienced at this you will have an accurately drawn on design.

It is very important that the fabric is very closely woven such as 200 threads to an inch cotton fabric or silk Shantung fabric or silk Dupioni fabric that have no slubs as it can interfere with the stitching. If it is a thin cotton fabric such as broad cloth, I suggest using two pieces together so there is heavier foundation to work the stitches on. If you are using silk fabric I suggest putting a cotton fabric behind for support.
You cannot use a fabric that is used for cross stitch or blackwork as you will not be able to work the stitches close enough together and it will spoil the look of the embroidery..

You will need four shades of embroidery cotton thread such as DMC or Anchor for the blue mountains and four shades for the green grass. You can use different colours but they should shade nicely so no large jumps in shade/tone. You need a finer thread for the tree as the embroidery cotton is a bit thick. In the original embroidery YLI silk embroidery thread is used.

The embroidery is outlined in gilt super pearl purl. I originally was not going to outline the embroidery but I found it looks more complete with the outline and the pearl purl outline is also good for neatening up unevenly stitched edges.
