Hello everyone, it’s so nice to e-meet you! My name is CJ Hyland and I reside in Chicago, IL with my husband/best friend Pete and our “kids,” Izzy a 13 year old miniature dachshund/grand dame and Hossa a 4 year old Golden Retriever/Certified Therapy Dog. Life has been crazy here since the pandemic began, and as I can imagine for most of us there have been a lot of changes. One thing that has not changed however is my passion for needle arts.
Much like Tania, my introduction to needle arts came at a young age (8 yrs old) when I had to complete a counted cross stitch sampler to earn a brownie troop badge. I LOVED earning that badge (I still have it on my idea board today) and that was where my odyssey with needle arts of all kinds began. Unfortunately, no one in my family had any knowledge on the subject, so I am largely self taught, but that hasn’t stopped me. At present, I am a part time project manager in the biotech/pharmaceutical industry and a full time fiber artist (doesn’t quite add up I know, but it’s my stretch goal). Prior to COVID-19, I taught classes in all kinds of fiber and needle arts at our local art center. I also have a studio where I create all kinds of fiber art from embroidery to art dolls to felted sculptural pieces. Many of my works reside in private collections & I feel so privileged that this support of my work continues today.
Lately my passion for hand embroidery has returned, so when I saw this class I knew I had to join in. I am so excited…my fingers are actually itching…???
