I do not intentionally angle the needle when I am working satin stitch, I think I mostly stitch straight up and down. For the color work in progress photos in the PDF files I tried to get the clearest photo of the stitch being worked and wasn’t thinking of the angle of the needle.
I don’t think the angle of the needle makes a difference to the appearance of the satin stitch but if it helps you to work the satin stitch by angling the needle you can definitely do that.
