Yes this is a very good idea. I use this method with goldwork embroidery when sewing down Purl threads as it is very labor intensive and if you have to remove metal threads because its damaged then you don’t have to take out previous stitches that took a lot of time to stitch.
I don’t use this technique with the needle painting as I’m confident in the stitching but as a beginner it is a very good method to ensure that you do not have to take more stitches out than is necessary if you have to take out a section.
