I usually start in the middle of a section to get the angle established. You can put in some stitches across the row if you want to set the angles, the only issue with this is that when you stitch up to these stitches you may end up with two long stitches next to each other or two short stitches next to each other so then you would work and in between length stitch.
It would be fine for you to have left those stitches and continued on and worked an in between length stitch to get you back into low stitch in a short stitch and a high stitch in a long stitch.
I am not concerned about what stitches are being split in the previous row, I do not try to split a low stitch in a short stitch and a high stitch in a long stitch in fact I don’t pay much attention to the length of the stitches in the previous row, I concentrate more on the position of the stitches in the row that is being worked regardless of what stitches I’m splitting in the previous row.
