Berlin Embroidery Designs – Tanja Berlin
Hi Jill
My designs in the A-Z of thread painting book are advanced designs (apart from the baby burrowing owl) and yes you do need to have worked several projects before attempting these as you need an understanding of the technique. I worked many beginners and intermediate needle painting designs before I worked these advanced designs.
When I worked the designs, I worked from a photograph and I had a line drawing of the design and broke it down into color sections and had a range of DMC embroidery threads that I wanted to use and compared them to the photograph and made some notes of where I wanted to use the colors on the diagram, which could change as I stitched the embroidery.
I would advise you to do what I did on page 10 of the first PDF file lesson and have a line drawing of your design and break it down into rows of long and short stitch which are about the same width as the rows of long short stitch as on the acorn woodpecker or a little bit wider and compare it to the color photo and write down the colors that you think you would use in those areas.
