Blackwork Study of Cats Kit

Blackwork Study of Cats Kit

$121.60$139.44 USD

The Blackwork Study of Cats design is a Level 3: Advanced of my Further Education kits and is an excellent design to work prior to the Blackwork Elephant as it uses the same patterns and shading method.

Each cat has its own blackwork pattern, dimension is created by changing the thickness of the thread and changing the density of the pattern.

The design is worked from a hard copy instruction booklet which has step by step numbered charts of the blackwork patterns accompanied by five PDF files with work-in-progress photos of the patterns on each cat.

The design is worked from a hard copy instruction booklet which has 26 pages of step by step numbered charts accompanied by five PDF files with work-in-progress photos of each cat. Each PDF file is at least 25 pages long with over 30 pictures and instructions in each PDF file.

You will begin the project by transferring the outline of the design onto the counted fabric in the tissue paper transfer method by tracing the outline onto a piece of tissue paper, pinning the tissue paper to the fabric and then working a basting stitch (tacked line) along all the design lines. The tissue paper is ripped away leaving tacked design lines on the fabric and then you work the blackwork patterns with-in the tacked design lines. The tacking is removed once the embroidery is complete.

The embroidery is then worked from the instruction booklet and PDF files. Every aspect of the embroidery is covered in the PDF files with step by step photos so you can see how each stage of the embroidery should look.

The blackwork cats are an advanced design not intended to be worked on 14 or 16 count Aida, so you should be able to count on 28 count or 32 count fabric. A stitching light and magnification are an asset to work the embroidery.

I recommend working one of my intermediate designs prior to working the cats to gain some experience in the tissue paper transfer method of working a blackwork design and shading with the patterns. There are no outlines in this design so accurate pattern shading to the tacking lines is required. The original embroidery was worked on 32 count Belfast linen fabric.

I am offering free on-going critique with this kit…..you can email me at any time if you have questions or would like me to critique your embroidery.

Description of Fabric Types:

The count of a fabric is the amount of threads there are per inch of the fabric. The more threads there are per inch the harder it will be to see the holes in the fabric.

  • 28 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
  • 28 Count Cashel Linen: 100% Linen. The fabric has uneven weave threads (threads are different thicknesses) giving a natural look.
  • 32 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
  • 32 Count Belfast Linen: 100% Linen. The fabric has uneven weave threads (threads are different thicknesses) giving a natural look.
