Blackwork Study of Cats
Blackwork Study of Cats
$19.92 – $79.66 USD
The Blackwork Study of Cats embroidery is a Level 3: Advanced of my Further Education kits and is an excellent design to work prior to the Blackwork Elephant as it uses the same patterns and shading method.
Each cat has its own blackwork pattern, dimension is created by changing the thickness of the thread and changing the density of the pattern.
There are 26 pages of detailed instructions with step-by-step numbered patterns to guide you through the embroidery and there is the option of getting the five PDF files with work-in-progress photos of each cat which are set up as lessons.

Each PDF file is at least 25 pages long with over 30 pictures and instructions in each PDF file.
The embroidery is worked in the tissue paper transfer method. This is an easier method than working the pattern directly from a set chart as there is more versatility where each pattern can be worked so is less complicated to work. There is not a full chart of the embroidery in the instructions.
The blackwork cats are an advanced design not intended to be worked on 14 or 16 count Aida, so you should be able to count on 28 count or 32 count fabric. A stitching light and magnification are an asset to work the embroidery.
I recommend working one of my intermediate designs prior to working the cats to gain some experience in the tissue paper transfer method of working a blackwork design and shading with the patterns. There are no outlines in this design so accurate pattern shading to the tacking lines is required. The original embroidery was worked on 32 count Belfast linen fabric.
I am offering free on-going critique with this kit…..you can email me at any time if you have questions or would like me to critique your embroidery.
Description of Fabric Types:
The count of a fabric is the amount of threads there are per inch of the fabric. The more threads there are per inch the harder it will be to see the holes in the fabric.
- 28 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
- 28 Count Cashel Linen: 100% Linen. The fabric has uneven weave threads (threads are different thicknesses) giving a natural look.
- 32 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
