The Goldwork Peacock Feather is an intermediate design.
The peacock feather is worked in Or Nue which is the method of couching down a metal thread with coloured threads to create a pattern. Each frond on the feather is couched down with silk or metallic threads to create the iridescent feather.
The fabric comes with the design hand painted on so you do not have to worry about transferring the design yourself and all the threads in the kit are clearly labelled.

The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

A goldwork and beading pad is a brilliant piece of Velux/velvet like fabric which you can use to place goldwork threads on and cut them and place spangles and beads on so they will stay in one place rather than skidding across a table surface when working with them.

Techniques and Threads Worked on the Peacock Feather Design:
- Padding: The eye of the feather is padded with felt.
- Peacock Eye: The fronds on the peacock eye are worked in rows of rococco which are couched down with a red silk thread and a range of metallic threads to create the colours on the eye of the peacock feather.
- Feather Barbs: The feather barbs are worked in lines of coloured passing thread and rococco couched down with a metallic cord.
Each of my goldwork designs have different metal thread techniques so doing one design doesn’t necessarily prepare you for another design. Each design is unique making for a new stitching experience each time.

Gold 2% WM means that there is 2% gold in the plating on white metal (silver plated copper). The gilt threads have 1/2% of gold in the plating. Both types of thread tarnish as the metals are copper based and oxidize over time when exposed to light and the elements. Display the embroidery in a dark location with no direct natural or artificial light to slow down the rate of tarnishing.
