Mellor
A mellor also known as a mellore or melor is a perfectly manufactured tool for metal thread embroidery.
The mellor is made out a soft smooth metal that is not abrasive.
The narrower end is used as a stiletto to widen a hole in the ground fabric to plunge a heavy twisted cord or metal thread to the back.
The round end is used to nudge and push metal threads into position and is gentler on the metal threads than using tweezers as the mellor has been polished and has smooth rounded edges so less likely to damage the metal thread.

The Kreinik Japan threads are the softest of the Japan threads that I carry with the synthetic foil not as firmly wrapped around the fibre core. The Kreinik Japan threads will not tarnish.
- No. 1 Japan thread is the finest of the Kreinik Japan threads that I carry and is approximately 0.2 mm across the width of the thread and is a good thread for couching down metal threads such as Check Thread, Flatworm, Japan thread, Large Back, Standard Lurex Thread, Passing and Rococco or used for counted and surface embroidery on its own or in combination with another embroidery thread.
- No. 5 Japan thread is approximately 0.35 mm across the width of the thread and there are many colour options for the thread (close in size to T71 Japan Thread).
- No. 7 Japan thread is the thickest of the three Kreinik Japan thread that I carry and is approximately 0.5 mm across the width of the thread (close in size to No. 8 (K4) Japan Thread and T70 Japan Thread).
The No. 5 and No. 7 Japan thread is usually couched down two threads at the time (as it fills in the design area faster) and couched down with the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting thread in a bricking fashion. If sewn down with a contrasting thread the Japan thread can be couched down in colour in a pattern or with a range of shades, this is known as Or Nue. Japan threads are used to fill in areas of a design or for fine lines.
The company has discontinued skeins so if there is not a skein option your only option is the spool.
