Pearl Purl is a wire that is wound into a tight coil that looks like a strand of gold pearls. The wire can be stretched to create different effects and used as outlines for designs or as a filling and can be combined with other threads for interesting effects.

Visit the Metal Thread Information page of my website for further information and pictures on how the thread can be used on an embroidery and FAQ about metal threads.

I have many sizes and colours of pearl purls ranging from very fine to thick.

  • Very Fine Pearl Purl is the finest of the pearl purls and is approximately 0.6 mm across the width of the thread.
  • Super Pearl Purl (equivalent to No. 4 Jaceron) is approximately 0.75 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 1 Pearl Purl (equivalent to No. 7 Jaceron) is approximately 0.9 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 2 Pearl Purl (gold, silver and copper) are approximately 1.1 mm across the width of the thread.
  • No. 3 Pearl Purl is approximately 1.25 mm across the width of the thread.
  • Coloured No. 2 Pearl Purls (Black, Bright Violet, Dark Blue, Dark Purple, Ivory, Leaf Green, Mid Brown, Opaque Green, Super Emerald, Vivid Red and Warm Gold) vary in width from 1.25 mm to 1.75 mm across the width of the thread.

Pearl Purl is a wire that is wound into a tight coil that looks like a strand of gold pearls. The wire is copper based with a gold, silver or copper plating and will tarnish over time.

Pearl Purl needs to be stretched before it is used which enables the couching thread to slip down between the twist of the wire. Tiny stitches are used to sew down the pearl purl at 3 or 4 coil intervals in a thread of the same colour and at the same angle as the twist of the wire so that the thread slips down between the coils and is invisible. The last photo shows pearl purl being sewn down.

The thread is stiff and easy to manipulate and the end of the thread is cut sheer at the top of the work, rather than taking the end to the back of the work.

Pearl Purls threads are used as outlines for designs or as a filling and can be combined with other threads for interesting effects.

Visit the Metal Thread Information page of my website for further information and pictures on how the thread can be used on an embroidery and FAQ about metal threads.

Smooth Purls are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube with a smooth and shiny surface.

The tube is cut up into chips (beads) and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden and can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension.

Large Back comes in one size and is similar to passing thread but much thicker (approximately 1.25 mm across the width of the thread) and is great for outlining.

The thread is rounded and smooth in appearance and turns corners easily when using a fine tipped tweezers. Large Back is couched down singularly in the same colour sewing thread or a contrasting colour.

Twists also know as Torsades are cords that are made up of three strands. Each individual strand is made up of a fine metal wired wrapped around a fibre core. The three strands are twisted into a cord. The cords can be used as filling thread or an outlining thread.

Visit the Metal Thread Information page of my website for further information and pictures on how the thread can be used on an embroidery and FAQ about metal threads.
