Bullion – Wire Check Purl
Bullion – Wire Check Purl
$7.65 – $11.86 USD
Price Per Yard. Available in Gold 2%, Gilt, Silver, Copper and a variety of colours.
Wire Check Purls are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube with a serrated/jaggered dull (matte) surface.
The tube is cut up into chips (beads) and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden and can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension.
I recommend ordering enough for your project as each manufacturing batch can differ slightly in the appearance of the serrated/jaggered surface and colour.

Mellor
A mellor also known as a mellore or melor is a perfectly manufactured tool for metal thread embroidery.
The mellor is made out a soft smooth metal that is not abrasive.
The narrower end is used as a stiletto to widen a hole in the ground fabric to plunge a heavy twisted cord or metal thread to the back.
The round end is used to nudge and push metal threads into position and is gentler on the metal threads than using tweezers as the mellor has been polished and has smooth rounded edges so less likely to damage the metal thread.
Size: 2 7/8 inches (7 1/2 cm) long by 1/2 inch (1 1/4 cm) wide

Needles – Size 10 or 12 Crewel Embroidery
The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

Needles – Beading
I carry the hard to find short beading needles which are excellent for goldwork embroidery when the size 10 embroidery/crewel needle will not fit through the center of purl or bullion threads. The needles are also good for very fine needle painting/thread painting. The needles are 1 1/4 inch ( 3 1/4 cm) long. The beading needles have a long slender eye for easier threading and a choice of sharp point or tapestry (ball) point. I carry size 10 and size 12 (finest).
I also carry regular long beading needles for your beading needs which are 2 inches (5 cm) long.

Needles – Size 12 Crewel Embroidery (Bag of 15 John James)
The size 12 crewel embroidery needle can be used for fine surface embroidery techniques where one single strand of embroidery thread is used such as needle painting, goldwork and fine white work.
The needle has a long eye and a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
I recommend using the size 12 crewel embroidery needles for sewing down down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads as the purl threads are a very narrow gold tube that other needles may not fit through.

I carry several sizes and colours in Wire Check Purl also know as Wire Check Bullion. The sizing is opposite to bullion threads in which the smaller the number the larger the size.
Please use purl threads instead of bullion threads if you are working on pictorial designs under 10 inch in size as my bullion threads are large threads intended for huge projects that stand out from a distance such as banners or alter frontals.
There are smaller bullions (purl threads) that are made in France, my supplier of bullions is in the UK and the sizing differs but both purl threads and bullion threads are the same.
- No. 4 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 2.00 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 5 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 1.8 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 6 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 1.5 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 7 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 1.2 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 8 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 1 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 9 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 0.8 mm across the width of the thread.
- No. 10 Wire Check Purl: Approximately 0.6 mm across the width of the thread.
Wire Check Purls are made up of a very fine wire thread that is wound into a soft flexible hollow tube a with a serrated/jaggered and dull (matte) surface. The wire of the thread is copper based with a gold, or colour plating and will tarnish over time. The thread is manufactured in random lengths so one yard will comprise of three or four sections.
The tube is cut up into chips (beads) and couched down onto the fabric – passing the needle and thread through the middle of the chip so the thread is hidden and can be sewn over felt or crochet cotton padding to give the area dimension – see the last picture.
You will need to use size 12 crewel embroidery needles or size 12 short, sharp beading needles to sew down No. 8 and No. 9 and No. 10 wire check purl as the hole through the metal tube is very narrow and the No. 10 Crewel Embroidery needle will not fit through the hole.
Wire Check Purl is easier to sew down the rough and smooth purl as it is more forgiving and will not crack or damage as easy if the purl chip is not cut to the correct length. I suggest ordering enough for your entire project as the manufacturing batches of the check purl can vary in appearance with the serrated/jaggered being more open or closed or differ in shade so you may not get an exact match the next time you order.
