Tweezers – Fine Tipped
These very fine tip tweezers are excellent tools for a wide range of embroidery purposes and is the tool that I use the most for hand embroidery.
They make great unpicking tools to grab those tiny threads your finger nails just can’t keep a hold of.
They are also a vital tool for Goldwork embroidery to hold, position and to manipulate metal threads.

Fabric – Tulle (Net) Honeycomb
Honeycomb tulle (net) has very even and pretty hexagon shapes and is higher quality than the standard dress making tulle which has irregular oval shapes. Tulle hexagon size is measured by the holes per inch (HPI).
The white polyester tulle is very fine and delicate and is the tulle that I use in my Carrickmacross Lace kits and Fine white Work kits There are 24 holes to the inch and is slightly stretchy.
The cotton tulle is off white in colour and the lines of the tulle are slightly thicker than the polyester tulle. The cotton tulle should be washed before use, expect 5% – 10% shrinkage.

Needles – Size 10 or 12 Crewel Embroidery
The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

I recommend working several of the samples from the Carrickmacross Lace Sampler kit prior to working the bee to familiarize yourself with the technique, for neater results.
There is enough fabric and thread supplied in the kit to work two bee designs.
Carrickmacross Lace is an Irish form of fine white work was the inspiration for Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. The technique is similar to English Fine White Work but is simpler and does not need to be worked in a frame or hoop but just in the hand. It is a fun technique because of the dimensions it creates due to cutting away of the cotton organdie to expose the net or open spaces.
I am offering free on-going critique with this kit…..you can email me at any time if you have questions or would like me to critique your embroidery.
Embroidery Size:
- 3 inches (7 1/2 cm) across
Description of Fabrics:
- Cotton Organdie: Is a firm, closely woven fabric that does not fray easily. It is important to use the correct fabric for Carrickmacross lace. Do not use organza fabric or a fine cotton fabric as the fabric will fray too easily and the embroidery will fall apart. A piece of cotton organdie comes in the kit and you can also purchase extra for other projects.
- Honeycombe Tulle (Net): Has very even hexagon shapes to the holes in the net which looks pretty when decorated with net patterns or on its own.
Kit Contents:

- One Piece of White Honeycombe Net (Tulle)

The beautiful fine embroidery is created by stitching three layers of fabric (two layers of shadow linen with a layer of net sandwiched in-between) are sewn together with surface embroidery stitches. This will leave some areas with two layers of fabric, some with one layer of fabric and some with just net creating a dimensional look to the embroidery. On the single layer of fabric pulled-work stitches are worked, in the net areas net stitches are worked.
