Needles – Size 10 or 12 Crewel Embroidery
The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

Cotton Organdie is a slightly transparent yet firm, closely woven fabric that does not fray easily which is most commonly used for Carrickmacross lace.
It is very important to use cotton Organdie for Carrickmacross lace, do not use organza fabric or a fine cotton fabric as the fabric will fray too easily and the embroidery will fall apart.
In the product pictures the Carrickmacross lace embroideries are worked on cotton Organdie fabric with honeycomb tulle behind the Organdie.

Thread – Silk Soie D’Alger
Au ver A Soie is the manufacturer of fine silk thread and yarns in France since 1820. Soie d’alger is a seven ply stranded silk, each strand is twisted. The silk comes in a 5 meter pull skein which means you can pull the thread out without removing the label.
I have dark yellow (gold), light yellow (gold), grey (silver), brown (copper), bright red, dark red and black which can be used for couching down metal threads and for silk shading when doing goldwork embroideries.

Kid Leather
The smooth kid leather has a metallic shiny surface except the “Copper Head” which has a matte surface. The kid leather is fairly stiff and is not appropriate for molding over very dimensional surfaces.
The wrinkled surface kid leathers come in gold, silver and pewter. They are slightly softer than the smooth surface leather and more mold-able.

Needles – Beading
I carry the hard to find short beading needles which are excellent for goldwork embroidery when the size 10 embroidery/crewel needle will not fit through the center of purl or bullion threads. The needles are also good for very fine needle painting/thread painting. The needles are 1 1/4 inch ( 3 1/4 cm) long. The beading needles have a long slender eye for easier threading and a choice of sharp point or tapestry (ball) point. I carry size 12 (finest).
The size 12 short sharp beading needles are equivalent to the size 12 crewel embroidery needles.
I also carry (regular) long beading needles for your beading needs which are 2 inches (5 cm) long.

Mountmellick Threads
The Mountmellick threads are white 100% durable cotton which have a firm quality. The threads have a mat surface which contrasts nicely with the cotton satin jean Mountmellick fabric which has a smooth and slightly shiny surface.
Traditionally the heavier Mountmellick threads are used of Mountmellick embroidery: sizes, 2, 3 and 4. The #1 is very fine and can be used for fine white work techniques.

Fabric – Ecclesiastical Linen Fabric – Sale
The Ecclesiastical Linen Fabric is antique white, closely woven, firm and smooth, 100% linen fabric.
The fabric is used for churchwork embroidery, fine white work surface embroidery and other surface embroidery techniques. Not suitable for pulled work or drawn thread due to the close weave.
I have few pieces on sale as that have faint creases that remain after being washed and ironed.

Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10Â gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Scissors: ToolTron Lace Safety Hand Embroidery
The ToolTron safety scissors with blunt ends are the perfect lace hand embroidery scissors and are highly recommended for needlework techniques that require precision cutting such as Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Hardanger and Drawn Thread.
The blunt ended scissors enables you to get close to the edge of the area to be cut without snipping the fabric with the point of the scissors by mistake.
The blades of the scissors are sharp for a clean cut and slightly curved to get a closer cut.

Magnifiers – Magni-clips
Sorry I am not mailing the magnifiers to the USA at this time.
The magni-clips are magnifiers that clip onto the bridge of your glasses, they can be flipped up when not in use and put down over your glasses for close up work.
The magni-clips are light weight and rimless so as not to distract from your stitching. Excellent for all types of hand embroidery and close up work.
If you do not know the magnification that you require I suggest trying out different reading glasses over your current glasses to find out the magnification that you require.

Chenille needles can also be used for heavy surface embroidery such as crewel and Mountmellick. I carry a variety packet in which the needles range from size 18 (largest) to size 24 (smallest) and I sell the No. 18 chenille needle separately for goldwork embroidery.

Fabric – Lugana Black 25 Count – Sale
Lugana fabric is a blend of 52% cotton and 48% rayon.
The fabric has even weave threads so that stitches/patterns will work out more regular than on an uneven weave such as linen fabric. It has a nice smooth and firm surface so that when the embroidery is complete the viewer sees the embroidery and is not distracted by the fabric.
I have few pieces of Black 25 Count Lugana fabric on sale as there is a fold crease down the center of the fabric that may not wash or iron out. Excellent value if you intend to cover the entire surface with stitching.

The silk organza fabric is a fine transparent fabric that is strong, non-stretchy, non-shiny and non-glossy unlike some organza fabrics. It makes a great fabric for shadow work embroidery as the embroidery becomes the feature and not the fabric.
The embroideries in the pictures opposite are worked on silk organza fabric in herringbone stitch.

Felt
Felt makes an excellent padding material or foundation fabric for metal thread embroidery. Elements of a design can be padded in layers of felt in a matching colour to the metal threads and then the metals thread are sewn over top.
The felt is a combination of wool 20% and rayon 80% which is a thicker felt good for padding and felt for needle cases.
