Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Visit the Embroidery Tips web page for description and photos of the prick and pounce method of design transfer and you can read the explanation below..
Information about prick and pounce method of design transfer: The prick and pounce method of transferring a design onto fabric can be used for surface embroidery such for Applique, Brazilian, Free Embroidery, Goldwork, Needle Painting, Modern Jacobean, Surface Embroidery, Stumpwork, Traditional Jacobean and White Work. It can be used for any technique where the design lines will be covered.
A desired design to be worked is placed underneath a piece of vellum tracing paper and all the lines of the design are traced onto the tracing paper. A size 10 or size 9 crewel embroidery needle is screwed into a pricking tool and then holes are pricked along all the design lines on the tracing paper puncturing the design lines at 1/8th of and inch (3 mm) intervals. The tracing paper can held up to the light to check that all the lines have been pricked.
The pricked tracing paper is placed on to fabric (smooth side up) and can be held in place with weights on the corners of the tracing paper or by pinning the tracing paper to the fabric or if it is a small tracing then held in place with one hand whilst you rub the pounce on with the other hand using the pattern pounce.
The pattern pounce is a wooden tool that has a 1 1/4 inch (3 cm) round piece of felt on the end which is dipped into the container of pounce and then rubbed over the entire tracing paper in a circular fashion taking care not to rub the pounce over the edge of the tracing. The tracing paper is carefully lifted away leaving a pounce outline of the design on the fabric.
Excess pounce is blown away, then the pounce lines are drawn over with a lead pencil or white pencil depending on the colour of the fabric or painted over with permanent paint i.e. acrylics or oils. Any excess pounce is removed by holding the fabric so that it hangs down and slapping the back of the fabric with your hand.
The prick and pounce method is the most accurate method of transferring a design onto a piece of fabric for embroidery as you can transfer intricate and fine lines, in comparison to a light box where the fabric can shift distorting the design or using transfer paper which can smudge on the fabric.
I have a choice of black and grey pounce. Black pounce consists of finely ground up charcoal.
Grey pounce consists of finely ground up charcoal with flour added – not suitable for conservation embroidery.

Mellor
A mellor also known as a mellore or melor is a perfectly manufactured tool for metal thread embroidery.
The mellor is made out a soft smooth metal that is not abrasive.
The narrower end is used as a stiletto to widen a hole in the ground fabric to plunge a heavy twisted cord or metal thread to the back.
The round end is used to nudge and push metal threads into position and is gentler on the metal threads than using tweezers as the mellor has been polished and has smooth rounded edges so less likely to damage the metal thread.

Stiletto Rosewood 5 Inch
The beautiful rosewood stiletto has a smooth shaft and a tapered point and is 5 inches/12 1/2 cm long.
The rosewood stiletto can be used to enlarge holes in the ground fabric of the embroidery to enable the sewing needle or the ends of threads in goldwork to pass through the fabric easier on counted cotton and silk fabrics.
The stiletto is also useful as a laying tool when working with more than one strand of embroidery thread.

Needles – Size 12 Crewel Embroidery (Bag of 15 John James)
The size 12 crewel embroidery needle can be used for fine surface embroidery techniques where one single strand of embroidery thread is used such as needle painting, goldwork and fine white work.
The needle has a long eye and a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
I recommend using the size 12 crewel embroidery needles for sewing down down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads as the purl threads are a very narrow gold tube that other needles may not fit through.

The beading needles have a long slender eye for easier threading and a choice of sharp point or tapestry (ball) point. I carry size 10 and size 12 (finest).

Japanese Koma
The wooden Koma is a square-ended wooden spool used to maintain tension with Japanese/Japan threads.
The Japan thread is wound onto the spool. If the embroidery is to be worked by sewing down two strands of Japan thread down at the same time then the Japan thread can be wrapped onto the spool double or two separate spools can be used with a single strand of Japan thread on each spool as it is easier to keep the two strands at an even tension as it is sewn down.

Needle Threaders
Wire needle threaders are for all sizes of needles but are most useful for fine needles as it enables you to thread the really small eyed needles easier.
The metal wire loop of the needle threader is threaded into the eye of the needle (much easier than threading in a strand of thread), the thread is then threaded into the wire loop of the threader and then the wire loop and embroidery thread are pulled back through the eye of the needle, the thread is now threaded into the needle.

Stretcher Bar Frames
Stretcher bars are inexpensive wooden embroidery frames in which the fabric can be pulled really tight. The end of the bars have teeth that you slot together to form a frame at any size that you require for your needlework. I recommend the stretcher bar frames to work my hand embroidery kits in because they are very quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame.
I highly recommend purchasing the brass thumb tacks which are stronger and sharper than office supplies thumb tacks or quilters thumb tacks.
