Needles – Size 10 or 12 Crewel Embroidery
The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

Scissors: ToolTron Lace Safety Hand Embroidery
The ToolTron safety scissors with blunt ends are the perfect lace hand embroidery scissors and are highly recommended for needlework techniques that require precision cutting such as Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Hardanger and Drawn Thread.
The blunt ended scissors enables you to get close to the edge of the area to be cut without snipping the fabric with the point of the scissors by mistake.
The blades of the scissors are sharp for a clean cut and slightly curved to get a closer cut.

Carrickmacross Lace is an Irish form of fine white work was the inspiration for Kate Middleton’s wedding dress. The technique is similar to English Fine White Work but is simpler and does not need to be worked in a frame or hoop but just in the hand. It is a fun technique because of the dimensions it creates due to cutting away of the cotton organdie to expose the net or open spaces.
I am offering free on-going critique with this kit…..you can email me at any time if you have questions or would like me to critique your embroidery.
Sampler Round Sample Sizes:
- The samples range form 5/8 of an inch (1 1/2 cm) across to 1 1/2 inch (3 3/4 cm) across
Stitches Included in the Instruction Booklet
- Starting and Ending Threads: So that it is invisible.
- Couching: The basic stitch of Carrickmacross Lace which is couching down a cord with a fine white thread and then areas of the cotton organdie cut away to expose the net in preparation for net patterns or button hole pops to be worked on the net.
- Couching with Picot Edge: The basic couching stitch forming loops on the edge of sample. In traditional Carrickmacross lace the picot edge loops are even in size and spacing.
- Couching with Picot Edge – Enhanced: More than one row of couching which creates heavier lines of white stitching. The picot edge worked alternating different size loops.
- Buttonhole Bars: Buttonhole bars and buttonhole bars with thorns. The buttonhole bars are usually worked over open sections in the design. The fabric and net is cut away from behind the buttonhole bars.
- Cutting: Instructions for cutting away fabric to expose the net or open spaces and around the edge of the samples.
- Net Patterns: A variety of net patterns.
- Pops: Buttonhole wheel worked over the net.
Description of Fabric:
- Cotton Organdie: Is a firm, closely woven fabric that does not fray easily. It is important to use the correct fabric for Carrickmacross lace. Do not use organza fabric or a fine cotton fabric as the fabric will fray too easily and the embroidery will fall apart. A piece of cotton organdie comes in the kit and you can also purchase extra for other projects.
- Honeycombe Tulle (Net): Has very even hexagon shapes to the holes in the net which looks pretty when decorated with net patterns or on its own. The polyester tulle is included in the kit which is the tulle that was used in the original Carrickmacross Lace sampler. If you prefer I have cotton tulle that can be used instead. You will require one 8 inch by 10 inch piece.
Kit Contents:
- Instruction Booklet – 30 Pages of Instructions with 17 Samples to Work
- One Piece of White Cotton Organdie Fabric 8 inch by 10 inch
- One Piece of White Polyester Honeycombe Net (Tulle) 8 inch by 10 inch. If you prefer I have cotton tulle that can be used instead. You will require one 8 inch by 10 inch piece.
- Two Spools of White Gutermann Fine Cotton Couching Thread
- 10 Yards of White DMC No. 20 Cordonnet for the Cord
- Two Size 10 Crewel Embroidery Needle
