The Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork Designs are great transition designs for those new to blackwork and who have previously done cross-stitch, although no experience of cross-stitch or counted thread is necessary.
The Swan Reflections is worked from a chart and has a detailed instruction booklet which has step-by-step numbered diagrams and instructions to guide you through the blackwork patterns. The embroidery can be worked in colour if you do not like black.

Needles – Blackwork
My blackwork kits come with two tapestry needles. If you choose a kit with 14 and 16 count fabric you will be provided with one size 24 (largest) and one size 26. If you choose a kit with 28 count or 32 count fabric you will be provided with one size 26 and one size 28 (smallest). You have the option to purchase more needles in case you loose a needle.

This is design is a little more intricate in comparison to the other Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork Designs and not recommended for the complete beginner.
If you have never done counted work then you may want to work the embroidery on 14 or 16 count Aida as the fabric is the easiest to work the patterns on.
The design looks great in colour and variegated embroidery thread if you are not partial to black. Approximately 8 meters of a 6 strand embroidery thread is required for the embroidery.
A stitching light and magnification are an asset to work the embroidery.

Description of Fabric Types:
The count of a fabric is the amount of threads there are per inch of the fabric. The more threads there are per inch the harder it will be to see the holes in the fabric. The 28 and 32 count fabrics have a softer feel and look compared to the 14 and 16 count Aida fabric.
- 14 Count and 16 Count Aida Fabric: 100% Cotton. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). 14 count is the easiest fabric to count for absolute beginners in counted embroidery or for those who have difficulties seeing 28 or 32 count fabric.
- 28 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
- 28 Count Cashel Linen: 100% Linen. The fabric has uneven weave threads (threads are different thicknesses) giving a natural look.
- 32 Count Lugana: 52% cotton and 48% Rayon. The fabric has even weave threads (all threads are the same thickness). The patterns come out more even on the even weave fabric compared to the linen fabric.
- 32 Count Belfast Linen: 100% Linen. The fabric has uneven weave threads (threads are different thicknesses) giving a natural look.

You will require experience in the tissue paper transfer method of working a blackwork design and experience in shading blackwork patterns by changing the density of the pattern and the thickness of the thread.

Blackwork Study of Cats
The Blackwork Study of Cats embroidery is a Level 3: Advanced of my Further Education kits and is an excellent design to work prior to the Blackwork Elephant as it uses the same patterns and shading method.
Each cat has its own blackwork pattern, dimension is created by changing the thickness of the thread and changing the density of the pattern.
