Fabric – Tulle (Net) Honeycomb
Fabric – Tulle (Net) Honeycomb
$2.41 – $21.73 USD
Honeycomb tulle (net) has very even and pretty hexagon shapes and is higher quality than the standard dress making tulle which has irregular oval shapes. Tulle hexagon size is measured by the holes per inch (HPI).
The white polyester tulle is very fine and delicate and is the tulle that I use in my Carrickmacross Lace kits and Fine white Work kits There are 24 holes to the inch and is slightly stretchy.
The cotton tulle is off white in colour and the lines of the tulle are slightly thicker than the polyester tulle. The cotton tulle should be washed before use, expect 5% – 10% shrinkage.

Stretcher Bar Frames
Stretcher bars are inexpensive wooden embroidery frames in which the fabric can be pulled really tight. The end of the bars have teeth that you slot together to form a frame at any size that you require for your needlework. I recommend the stretcher bar frames to work my hand embroidery kits in because they are very quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame.
I highly recommend purchasing the brass thumb tacks which are stronger and sharper than office supplies thumb tacks or quilters thumb tacks.
Please visit the following webpage for instructions on how to assemble a stretcher bar frame and choosing the right size for your needlework: Stretcher Bar Frames Information

Fabric – Muslin Southern Belle
The Southern Belle muslin fabric (Calico in European terms) is a 100% cotton fabric and is light cream in colour.
This wonderful fine quality muslin fabric has a 200 thread count (regular muslin fabric thread count starts at 70) and no flecks, specks and slubs which is common in muslin fabric, it has a very clean look. It makes an ideal ground fabric for needle painting and other forms of surface embroidery. I use the southern belle fabric in my needle painting kits. It can be used double for extra support when working goldwork and as a backing fabric for silk fabric.
Please note that parts of the fabric have creases from the fabric being wrapped on the bolt by the manufacturer. Sorry I do not have time to wash and iron out the creases and the fabric is sold as is. The creased areas should iron out (wash fabric flat in hot water and iron dry on cotton heat) and can be used for backing fabric.

Needles – Crewel Embroidery
Embroidery or crewel needles have a long eye for easier threading, a slender shaft and a sharp point to the needle so that the stitches can be worked close together and there is more control for the placement of the stitches.
The needles can be used for surface embroidery and sewing.
Crewel/embroidery needles are not suitable for counted thread work as the point of the needle would easily catch the threads of the fabric, distorting the counted work.
Size 10 are my choice needles for fine surface embroidery in which only one single strand of silk thread or embroidery cotton is used.
For very fine embroidery. when only using a single strand of fine thread or for sewing down No. 8, No. 9 and No. 10 gold purl threads use size 12 crewel embroidery.

Fabric – Lugana
Lugana fabric is a blend of 52% cotton and 48% rayon. I have a choice of 28 count antique white and 25 count black. Lugana fabric is 55 inches wide.
The fabric has even weave threads so that stitches/patterns will work out more regular than on an uneven weave such as linen fabric. It has a nice smooth and firm surface so that when the embroidery is complete the viewer sees the embroidery and is not distracted by the fabric.
