The Goldwork Sampler is a great design for learning how to use different metal threads.
I provide the instructions for free in the form of a PDF file with 45 pages of diagrams, colour pictures and instructions for working the sampler.
You can use the sampler instructions to work the sampler or as a reference manual for sewing down metal threads. No part of the instructions can be used for commercial purposes, profited from, published in print or on the internet without permission from Tanja Berlin.

A goldwork and beading pad is a brilliant piece of Velux/velvet like fabric which you can use to place goldwork threads on and cut them and place spangles and beads on so they will stay in one place rather than skidding across a table surface when working with them.

Mellor
A mellor also known as a mellore or melor is a perfectly manufactured tool for metal thread embroidery.
The mellor is made out a soft smooth metal that is not abrasive.
The narrower end is used as a stiletto to widen a hole in the ground fabric to plunge a heavy twisted cord or metal thread to the back.
The round end is used to nudge and push metal threads into position and is gentler on the metal threads than using tweezers as the mellor has been polished and has smooth rounded edges so less likely to damage the metal thread.

The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

I recommend the stretcher bar frame to work my hand embroidery kit in because the frame is quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame. Tweezers – Tooltron Rainbow Tweezers, Fine Tipped
The fine tip, small, tweezers are excellent tools for a wide range of purposes such as hand embroidery, beading and sewing. The tweezers make a great unpicking tools to grab those tiny threads your finger nails just can’t keep a hold of and easy to pinch closed.

The goldwork scissors are perfect for goldwork embroidery. The arrow head blades of the scissors are fine, sharp, slightly curved and very finely serrated for precision cutting.
The finger holes are large for embroidery scissors, so they are easy to pick up and hold into position when cutting the metal threads.

Techniques and Threads Worked on the Goldwork Sampler Design:
- Passing Design: The scroll is padded with felt.
- Passing Design: The red drops are worked in satin stitch in silk thread.
- Passing Design: The red drops are outlined with a twisted cord.
- Passing Design: The scroll is worked in rows of passing thread.
- Passing Design: The scroll is outlined with pearl purl.
- Heart Design: The leaves are padded with felt.
- Heart Design: Lines of crochet cotton padding are sewn down on the heart.
- Heart Design: The leaves are worked in rows of rococco.
- Heart Design: Stem, tendrils and the leaves are outlined in pearl purl.
- Heart Design: The heart is worked in rows of Japan Thread.
- Heart Design: The heart is outline in a hand made red silk cord.
- Fleur De Lys: The Fleur De Lys is padded with crochet cotton.
- Fleur De Lys: Sections of the Fleur De Lys are worked in long and short stitch in red silk thread.
- Fleur De Lys: The Fleur De Lys is worked in bright check purl, rough purl and smooth purl.
- Plate Design: Areas of the Plate Design are padded with felt.
- Plate Design: The scrolls are worked in long and short stitch in red silk thread.
- Plate Design: Sections of the center section are worked in Broad Plate and Whipped Plate
- Plate Design: Twisted cord is sewn around the plate sections.
- Plate Design: Spangles and purl chips are sewn down in the round sections and down the center of the red scrolls.

Metal threads tarnish as the metals are copper based under a gold plating and oxidize over time when exposed to light and the elements. Display the embroidery in a dark location with no direct natural or artificial light to slow down the rate of tarnishing.

Goldwork Ram Kit
The Goldwork Ram design is a combination of metal thread and counted thread embroidery.
The design is worked on black 25 count Lugana fabric. First a tacked outline of the design is transferred onto the fabric, then the face is worked in simple blackwork pattern in 5 shades of metallic threads and outlined in pearl purl.
The horn is padded with crochet cotton and then soft gold beads are sewn down over the crochet cotton alternating between different shades and texture of the beads creating a dimensional horn.
