The size 10 crewel embroidery needle is used in my surface embroidery kits such as: Carrickmacross Lace, Fine White Work, Goldwork, Modern Jacobean, Needle Painting and Shadow Work.
My kits come with two needles but you may want to purchase more of the needles as size 10 embroidery/crewel needles, in case you mislay your needle as the size 10 crewel embroidery needles can be hard to find in craft stores as they are smaller than regular sewing needles.
I also carry the size 12 crewel embroidery needles. I often use these for sewing down purl threads in goldwork or if I am working a very fine needle painting design.

I recommend the stretcher bar frame to work my hand embroidery kit in because the frame is quick to assemble and the fabric stays taught in the frame. Needle Threaders
Wire needle threaders are for all sizes of needles but are most useful for fine needles as it enables you to thread the really small eyed needles easier.
The metal wire loop of the needle threader is threaded into the eye of the needle (much easier than threading in a strand of thread), the thread is then threaded into the wire loop of the threader and then the wire loop and embroidery thread are pulled back through the eye of the needle, the thread is now threaded into the needle.

The Clear Purple Pansy is worked in needle painting also known as thread painting and long and short stitch. This is the most realistic form of surface embroidery which is worked in staggered straight stitches in a single strand of embroidery thread on a closely woven fabric, blending rows of colour to create a very realistic embroidery. The sheen of the threads adds to the soft effect of the petals.

The fabric comes with the design printed on so you do not have to be concerned about transferring the design yourself and the silk threads come on a numbered thread template so you know exactly which colour to use on the embroidery.
For the pansy design there is the option of working the embroidery in DMC embroidery cotton threads on cream Southern Belle cotton Muslin fabric or with Needle Point silk threads on silk Shantung fabric. The pansy in the pictures is worked in DMC embroidery cotton threads on cotton fabric. There are 9 colours used in the embroidery.
In the kit I provide a detailed instruction booklet with 16 pages of step-by-step diagrams and instructions.
Needle painting can be challenging so I suggest learning the technique from one of my kits rather than from a book as you get much more instructions in my kit rather than a book which usually only has a few pages of instructions for one design.

Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork – Landscape
The Cross-Stitch Meets Blackwork Designs are great transition designs for those new to blackwork and who have previously done cross-stitch, although no experience of cross-stitch or counted thread is necessary.
